We are looking for an IT Technician to join our small, close-working IT team at the University of Buckingham. This is a hands-on second-line support role where you will have the opportunity to work across a broad range of technology, get to know the people you support and develop your experience beyond the boundaries of a traditional second-line support role.
As an IT Technician, you will provide technical support to the university community, investigating and resolving incidents and requests and taking ownership of issues through to resolution or appropriate escalation. Day to day, this will include supporting Microsoft 365 environment, working with Active Directory and Entra ID, troubleshooting software, hardware and connectivity issues, and supporting the technology used across our teaching, meeting and office spaces.
You will help support our AV environment, including Microsoft Teams Rooms and Yealink equipment, as well as troubleshooting wider classroom and event AV where required. This isn't a role where success is simply measured by answering and closing tickets. We want our team to understand what someone is trying to achieve, ask the right questions and use technology to find practical solutions that make people's working and learning lives easier.
Who we're looking for
We especially want to hear from people who are proactive, curious, take ownership and are willing to contribute wherever they can make a difference. You will already have experience in IT support and good technical foundations. You should be confident troubleshooting client operating systems and have practical experience of working with enterprise technologies such as Active Directory or Entra ID and Microsoft 365.
Beyond that foundation, we are more interested in your approach and willingness to learn than whether you can tick every box on a long list of technologies. Experience with IT service desk or ticketing systems, endpoint management, networking or AV would be useful, and experience supporting Microsoft Teams Rooms and wider AV equipment, would be especially welcome.
Just as importantly, you will need good people skills. You should be comfortable speaking with students, academics, professional services colleagues and senior members of the University, explaining technical issues clearly and adapting your approach to the person you are helping.
We are looking for someone with a positive approach who takes ownership, follows things through and works well with others. You won't always know the answer immediately, and we don't expect you to. We do expect you to be willing to investigate, ask questions, learn from colleagues and keep working towards a solution.
The closing date for applications is Friday 23rd October, and it is anticipated that interviews will be held Tuesday 10th November.
