We are seeking to recruit a dynamic and highly motivated individual to join the Institute of Science and Environment (IoSE) as a Lecturer (0.5 FTE) supporting the delivery of our Geography programme.
We are looking for an individual, keen to join an enthusiastic team, with a passion for creating transformational learning experiences and opportunities. The selected individual will be integral to the delivery of our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, as well as keen to contribute to future developments in our teaching, research and knowledge exchange portfolio. Applications are especially encouraged from individuals with expertise in environmental and physical geography, particularly in areas such as environmental processes and change, climate change and cryospheric environments. The selected individual will have an interest in- and ability to- complete research or knowledge exchange activities and publish in the chosen disciplinary field. Candidates should hold a relevant first degree, and preferably a PhD, as well as a genuine ability and enthusiasm to facilitate learning in diverse contexts (class, practical and field based).
The selected individual will join a successful, practical and research-led academic team with a reputation for innovation in course design and development. Prior experience in teaching in higher education is desirable, but not essential. For those new to teaching, the University offers a PgC in Learning and Teaching for Higher Education. As one of the most research active Institutes within the University, we encourage and support all staff to continue to develop their personal research and knowledge exchange interests. This is supported by the existence of the Centre for National Parks and Protected Areas, which has sub-themes of Cultural Landscapes, Conservation & Ecology, Human-Nature Relations and Rural & Visitor Economy.
The Institute is split across two sites, Ambleside and Carlisle, to suit the academic portfolio and delivery needs of the programmes. The academic portfolio provides a range of undergraduate programmes including Outdoor Leadership, Outdoor Adventure and Environmental Studies, Geography, Forestry, Woodland Ecology and Conservation and Ecology and Wildlife Conservation at our Ambleside Campus, and Biomedical Science, Chemistry and Zoology at our Carlisle Campus. Additionally, we have a developing postgraduate taught provision and a growing postgraduate and post-doctoral research community through our Innovation for Conservation and Peatland Intelligence research programmes.
Based at our Ambleside campus, the selected individual will become part of a dedicated Geography and Outdoor Studies team that blends academic expertise with applied and professional practice through courses at undergraduate (BSc and BA programmes) and Masters level (MA and MSc programmes). The team collaborates closely with colleagues in Forestry and Conservation in both teaching and research. Our Geography programme is delivered from the Ambleside campus in the Heart of the Lake District National Park which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offering incredible practical and fieldwork opportunities on our doorstep.
