As Liverpool John Moores University's School of Art and Creative Industries celebrates 200 years of pioneering creative education, it continues to be recognised as one of the UK's leading art schools, consistently ranked in the UK top ten for Art and Design in the Complete University Guide and Guardian League Tables since 2021.
Building on this rich heritage, the School is home to the Institute of Art and Technology (IAT), a world-leading transdisciplinary research centre. In REF 2021, IAT achieved 100% world-leading and internationally excellent ratings for Research Impact and Research Environment. The School also hosts the Exhibition Research Lab (ERL), an internationally recognised public gallery delivering a year-round programme of exhibitions, events, residencies, commissions and publications through local and global cultural partnerships.
Tate Liverpool, one of the UK's leading galleries for modern and contemporary art, is currently undergoing a major transformation. Its reimagined galleries will strengthen the connection between art, people and place, delivering an ambitious exhibition, learning and public engagement programme for the future.
We are seeking an outstanding researcher and curator to join us in a unique joint appointment as Senior Lecturer with an embedded curatorial role at Tate Liverpool. This position combines academic leadership and curatorial practice, with approximately 0.8 FTE based at LJMU and 0.2 FTE at Tate Liverpool.
The successful candidate will contribute to teaching and research in contemporary art, art history and curating, while helping to shape Tate Liverpool's public programme. We welcome applications from candidates with an established research profile, a strong publication record and recognised expertise in a defined area of specialism, ideally decolonisation and non-Western art.
The role has been created to strengthen and expand the research partnership between LJMU and Tate Liverpool. You will contribute to research strategy, develop high-quality research outputs and impact activity, attract external funding, and engage diverse audiences through exhibitions, publications and public programmes.
At LJMU, you will deliver research-informed teaching, supervise student learning, contribute to grant development and support the School's thriving research culture. At Tate Liverpool, you will work closely with curatorial, exhibitions and learning teams to inform research, public programming and integrated practice.
In return, we offer a competitive salary, generous annual leave, excellent pension provision, opportunities for career development and a supportive, collaborative working environment.
The post reports to the Head of Art and Design at LJMU, with day-to-day direction for Tate-related activity provided by the Director of Tate Liverpool.
We welcome applications from all suitably qualified candidates and particularly encourage applications from women, people from ethnically diverse backgrounds, LGBTQ+ people and disabled people. LJMU is committed to creating an inclusive and representative workforce, and we will provide reasonable adjustments throughout the recruitment process where required.
