The Sub-department of Astrophysics at the University of Oxford invites applications for a postdoctoral research position focused on the design and implementation of a large-scale astrophysical transients programme using the Africa Millimetre Telescope (AMT). The successful candidate will work closely with the Oxford-based and international Blackholistic and AMT teams to develop this pioneering scientific programme.
The AMT is a new millimetre-wavelength telescope under construction in Namibia, with first observations anticipated in 2027–2028. It will become an integral component of the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) array, significantly enhancing its uv coverage and improving its snapshot imaging capabilities.
Alongside its contribution to the EHT, the AMT will undertake a major dedicated programme of rapid-response observations and high-cadence monitoring of astrophysical transients. The programme will encompass a broad range of transient phenomena, from extragalactic events such as gamma-ray bursts to flaring stars in the local Universe, and will incorporate a rapid-response observing mode. The AMT will be the first millimetre-wavelength facility to undertake a transient science programme of this scale, opening new opportunities for time-domain astrophysics. The postholder will have opportunity to teach.
Applicants should hold a PhD, or be close to completing one, in astrophysics or a related discipline. Previous experience in radio or millimetre astronomy and astrophysical transients would be highly desirable.
Candidates should also demonstrate excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary, international research environment.
Please direct enquiries about the role to Prof. Rob Fender (Rob.Fender@physics.ox.ac.uk).
This is a full-time post, fixed term for 2 years
The closing date for applications is noon GMT time on Monday, 30 November 2026
You will be asked to upload a CV and a supporting statement. The CV should include a publication list (or ADS/SciX link to one) and should be up to 3 pages long. The supporting statement should be up to 3 pages, may include figures, and should cover (i) your background and experience and how it relates to the post and the listed selection criteria, (ii) your thoughts on a how a millimetre transients programme on the AMT could be best designed and implemented, (iii) what you think the most exciting science from such a programme could be.
You should arrange for your 2 referees to send your reference to leanne.odonnell@physics.ox.ac.uk before the closing date.
