A permanent position as Research Coordinator in the Accelerator Science cluster at Liverpool University is available. The role will be based at the Cockcroft Institute on Daresbury Science and Innovation Campus and make substantial contributions to the research portfolio of the pan-European QUASAR Group. It will focus on the development and experimental exploitation of particle accelerators and light sources, and we are looking for an outstanding accelerator expert to strengthen our team and complement our existing expertise. Applicants are expected to have an internationally recognized researcher profile and make major contributions to the cluster’s world-class research programme in accelerator science.
The cluster’s work currently stretches over the following principal research areas:
The scientific frontier facilities on which we aim to focus for the next decade include the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN; the Future Circular Collider (FCC); and the low energy antimatter facility AD/ELENA.
We will continue to push the development of novel acceleration techniques. We are a key partner in the EuPRAXIA facility and involved in many international collaborations such as PACRI and EPITA where we combine cutting-edge R&D with leadership in cross-sector knowledge transfer. Our research focuses in particular on more sustainable accelerators, the development of high-resolution diagnostics and knowledge transfer with identified industry partners.
We also carry out research into high impact applications of accelerators to address global challenges in health, security, energy, manufacturing and the environment. The accelerator science cluster has led a number of European research and training networks in these areas and works closely with industry partners in the UK and around the world.
Candidates are expected to develop the cluster’s cutting-edge research portfolio, work with our international partners, maximise the impact from our projects, co-supervise PhD and undergraduate students and contribute to research grant applications and the dissemination of our research results.
We are looking for an outstanding accelerator scientist to make important contributions to the cluster’s research and training programme. Your research will involve leadership in one are several of the following areas: accelerator design and optimization, sustainable accelerator technologies including AI, novel acceleration techniques, sensor and beam instrumentation development, and accelerator applications.
There are opportunities to contribute to teaching and supervision, and to make important contributions to major European projects such as High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), EuPRAXIA, EPITA and TwinRISE.
This role is based at the Cockcroft Institute on the campus of Daresbury Laboratory. The research will be carried out at partner institutions around the world, and some national and international travel will be required.
Candidates should have a PhD in a relevant discipline and an excellent track record in accelerator design and optimization, demonstrated through publications in high impact journals. Experience in the training and supervision of students will be an asset. The working language is English.
