The University of Sheffield ATLAS group invites applications for a Research Fellow position in Particle Physics. The role involves constructing silicon strip detector modules for the ATLAS Phase-II tracker upgrade. You will also help with the commissioning of the new detector and work on detector development for future experiments. Physics measurements at the High Energy Frontier within our remit (Higgs, Standard Model) are part of the job. You will manage one engineer and graduate students involved in the project. We want a motivated candidate who is keen to build and contribute to a balanced research programme in the group and take on leadership and related duties. Participation in funding proposals is anticipated, potentially leading to (co-)supervision of research associates or post-doctoral researchers.
You will need a PhD in particle physics or a related field and relevant experience with software such as C++, Python, Root, Athena, or GEANT4. You should also have a history of successful work within particle physics collaborations. Additionally, you must have experience contributing to and leading publications about your research.
You will be based in Sheffield, with frequent travel to CERN and other laboratories required.
The Sheffield ATLAS group consists of five academics and has contributed significantly to the successful construction, commissioning and operation of the ATLAS SCT detector. Our particular strengths lie in searches for SUSY particles, measurements of SM diboson processes sensitive to new physics and of the Higgs boson and related performance studies.

About the group
The University of Sheffield is a founder member of the international ATLAS collaboration working on the CERN Large Hadron Collider and our group is known internationally for our research. Group members have held and hold crucial positions within the ATLAS collaboration. Prof Costanzo is currently Collaboration Board Deputy Chair of the ATLAS collaboration. Prof. Tovey was ATLAS (Deputy) Physics Coordinator in 2015-17. Dr. Trevor Vickey has been recently Run Coordinator and is currently ITk Strip Resources Manager.
The ATLAS group is a component of the University of Sheffield Particle Physics and Particle Astrophysics (PPPA) group. The PPPA group also pursues an active research programme in neutrino physics (T2K, DUNE and HyperK), particle astrophysics (QSHS and LUX-ZEPLIN) as well as applied detector physics.
In the UK's most recent nationwide independent assessment - the Research Excellence Framework (REF) - Sheffield's Department of Physics and Astronomy ranked 1st in the UK for the quality of its research. It is part of the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences. Research topics in this area include Astronomy, Semiconductor Photonics and Quantum Technologies, Physical Sciences of Biological Systems, Functional Materials, Pure Mathematics and Mathematical and Statistical Modelling.
