Royal College of Art - Artificial Intelligence and Digital Art

Location: London
Salary: £56,192 to £62,600 per annum
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Permanent
Placed On: 21st October 2026
Closes: 4th November 2026
Job Ref: 120-26

The Royal College of Art (RCA) is the world’s leading university for art and design, ranked number one globally for 12 consecutive years (QS World University Rankings by Subject, 2015–2026). We are a postgraduate-only university with a rich history of creative innovation and a global community of artists, designers, researchers and practitioners.

We are seeking an established computational researcher, creative technologist or artist with expertise in creative coding, machine learning and artificial intelligence to join our MA/MFA Artificial Intelligence and Digital Art (AiDA) programme as a Tutor (Research).

About the role

This is an exciting opportunity to shape how the next generation of artists engage critically and creatively with AI. You will lead teaching in Creative Coding, developing students’ programming skills and computational thinking while supporting their progression into more advanced areas, including machine learning, generative AI and agentic AI.

Working with postgraduate artists from diverse disciplinary and technical backgrounds, you will help students explore how AI systems are constructed, how data and models can embed cultural assumptions and biases, and how artistic practice can challenge, reinterpret and reconfigure these technologies.

You will bring emerging developments in AI and computation into the studio, encouraging experimentation across creative coding, photography, installation, performance, robotics, software, moving image and networked media. You will also contribute to curriculum development, student supervision, assessment and the wider research culture of the programme.

As a research-active academic, you will develop and disseminate your own research, contribute to funding opportunities and help strengthen the RCA’s reputation for innovative, critical and artist-led approaches to emerging technologies.

About you

You will have advanced programming skills and expertise in creative coding, contemporary AI or machine-learning methods, alongside a strong research profile in computational art or a related field. You will be able to communicate complex technical concepts clearly and inspire postgraduate artists with varying levels of technical experience.

You will bring a critical understanding of AI, including the cultural assumptions, representation and bias embedded in data and models, as well as a commitment to inclusive, supportive learning environments. A doctorate or equivalent professional or academic achievement is required, together with evidence of high-quality postgraduate teaching and research excellence.

Join us

At the RCA, you will join a collaborative, interdisciplinary community where art, technology and critical thinking come together to challenge conventions and imagine new possibilities.

Contract: Permanent & full time, subject to a two-year probationary period.

Help us shape the future of creative practice and AI at the world’s leading university for art and design.

Closing for applications at 11.59pm on Wednesday 4th November 2026
