The Science Communication Unit (SCU) at UWE Bristol is recognised for internationally leading research, creative approaches to practice and outstanding teaching.
Our research seeks to bring science and society closer together, and as such we have a core interest in developing research which is societally-relevant and developed in conjunction with those who practice science communication. Our portfolio of activities is extensive, including innovative approaches to engaging diverse publics with science, which are informed by research.
We’re looking for a Project Editor to join our Science for Environment Policy project, funded by the European Commission. This project involves providing a high-quality news service for policymakers across Europe on behalf of the Directorate-General for Environment (DG ENV) of the European Commission. This news service provides policymakers with policy-relevant insights into the latest environmental science research. This is an exciting opportunity to be involved in a high-profile European project that is seeking to inform policy decisions aimed at addressing climate change and protecting the environment. Science for Environment Policy has over 23,000 subscribers across Europe and beyond.
You’ve got a background in and experience of science or environmental journalism, or a related field such as public relations. You’ve got a strong track record of communicating complex research in written form to non-expert audiences. Experience of managing editorial processes will be valuable in this role, as would experience of managing editorial teams.
You can demonstrate experience of managing and implementing editorial processes, managing their time and that of others effectively to ensure that deadlines are met. You can build and maintain effective working relationships internally and externally with different partners and stakeholders to enhance the effectiveness of communication activities. You’re experienced in selecting research studies to be featured in editorial material as well as writing and editing science or environmental science material for non-expert audiences. Experience of writing for policymakers would be advantageous, as would a working knowledge of European environmental policy.
In this role, you’ll be based at our modern Frenchay Campus. You’ll spend most of your time on campus, although you may have the opportunity to work from home with the agreement of your people manager.
We offer a wide range of employee benefits including progressive pay rates, very generous annual leave and career average pension schemes as well as retail savings, onsite nursery and opportunities for training and personal development.
We particularly encourage applications from global majority candidates as we are currently under-represented in this area, however all appointments are made strictly on individual merit.
As a Disability Confident employer, we encourage applications from disabled or neurodivergent candidates.
If you would like an informal discussion about this role, please contact:
UWE’s SfEP Project Manager Andy Ridgway: andy.ridgway@uwe.ac.uk.
This is a part-time, fixed-term post working 22 hours per week, until October 2027 although that may be renewed once up to the end point of the Science for Environment Policy (SfEP) contract with the European Commission in October 2028.
Salary offers are made in line with the University’s salary assessment guidelines, reflecting your relevant skills and experience in parity with colleagues.
If offered a role, you will need to provide valid documentation confirming your right to work in the UK before employment begins. Guidance on acceptable documents is available via the Home Office Right to Work Checklist.
