Role Description
Based at University of York campus (with some remote working options available)
The University of York invites applications from visionary research leaders for the role of Research Chair/Reader in Men’s Health. Based within the Department of Health Sciences, this pivotal appointment will sit at the heart of the newly established, world-class Movember Institute of Men’s Health.
This is a rare and significant opportunity to shape the strategic direction of a major new international research Institute at a critical moment for men’s health globally. Working alongside the Institute Director, you will play a leading role in defining the Institute’s research agenda, building interdisciplinary capacity, and translating robust evidence into real-world systems, services, and policies that effectively support men and boys across their life course.
We are seeking an established or emerging international research leader with a passion for applied health services and a collaborative ethos. You will possess an outstanding track record of high-quality peer-reviewed publications, sustained external research funding, and a proven ability to mentor early-career researchers and supervise doctoral students.
We welcome applications from a broad spectrum of cognate disciplines intersecting with men’s health, including but not limited to:
Crucially, you will excel at knowledge translation, demonstrating the ability to engage credibly with policy, health, third-sector, and community partners to achieve measurable impact beyond academia.
About the Department
The Department of Health Sciences at York is a national powerhouse for applied health research. In the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF 2021), the Department was ranked 6th in the UK for research power, with over 92% of our research rated as "world-leading" (4*) for impact.
As part of our vibrant community, you will collaborate with a diverse group of world-class clinicians, methodologists, and public health researchers across multidisciplinary groups. We foster a highly supportive, inclusive, and collaborative culture that bridges the gap between academic theory and the public good.
The University of York is deeply committed to promoting a diverse and inclusive academic community. We particularly encourage applications from women and candidates from Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic backgrounds, who are currently under-represented in senior academic leadership roles at the University.
Closing date: 22 November 2026
Interview date: 16 & 17 December 2026 (see candidate brief for further details).
Informal enquiries are highly welcomed and should be directed to Professor Paul Galdas via email at paul.galdas@york.ac.uk.
The University strives to be diverse and inclusive – a place where we can ALL be ourselves.
We particularly encourage applications from people who identify as Black, Asian or from a Minority Ethnic background, who are underrepresented at the University.
We also encourage applications from women for senior roles.
We offer family friendly, flexible working arrangements, with forums and inclusive facilities to support our staff. #EqualityatYork
