We also have an excellent research profile and were jointly recognised as the best modern university in the country for research, and the highest-ranked modern university in London in REF2021.
The Role
We are recruiting a new Head of Law Clinic to lead the operation and strategic development of the Roehampton Law School Law Clinic. This is a part-time (0.6 FTE), permanent post.
The Law Clinic has been a vital part of Roehampton Law School since January 2019. It is a successful, growing and busy Clinic that provides free legal services to people in our community who would otherwise not be able to access them. At the same time, it trains our Law School student volunteers in practice-based skills and knowledge. We now want to extend the Clinic’s reach to new client groups and partners, and we are looking for a candidate who can lead that growth and make the Clinic a central part of the School’s work.
The Head of the Law Clinic will be the public face of the Clinic for clients, student volunteers, partner organisations and referring bodies. The role includes managing the day-to-day running of the Clinic, including client intake, referrals through Refernet, and case management; supervising the legal team of solicitors, paralegals and legal assistants; recruiting, training and supporting student volunteers; making sure the Clinic complies with all relevant statutory and regulatory frameworks, including SRA, LawWorks and Refernet requirements; developing Clinic policies and protocols; building relationships with existing and new partners; pursuing business development and funding opportunities; and reporting on the Clinic’s performance and impact to the Law School and external stakeholders. You will work closely with the Head of Law School and with academic colleagues to make sure the Clinic fits with teaching and contributes to the School’s strategy.
The successful candidate will be a qualified solicitor, barrister or chartered legal executive (or hold an equivalent professional legal qualification), with a background in legal practice that has prepared them to lead a law clinic. You will need at least two years’ recent relevant experience, proven experience of supervising legal staff, volunteers or students, and a sound understanding of the regulatory requirements that apply to a university law clinic. You will be able to work well with colleagues across the University and to develop and lead the Clinic’s partnerships, both locally and nationally. Excellent communication skills, strong attention to detail and a real commitment to access to justice and pro bono work are required. You should be comfortable working in a fast-paced and dynamic workplace, both remotely and on campus.
