About us
UCL Careers provides careers education and guidance to students, graduates and staff, alongside recruitment solutions for employers. We support students in navigating recruitment and selection, from developing effective applications to preparing for interviews and securing opportunities in the UK and globally.
As part of HEDS, UCL Careers collaborates with faculties, departments, employers and partners to ensure our provision reflects the evolving graduate labour market and the needs of our diverse student community.
About the role
We are seeking a Recruitment & Selection Advisor to help students and graduates develop the skills and confidence to succeed in recruitment processes.
You will provide practical advice through one-to-one appointments, offering constructive feedback on CVs, cover letters, application forms, motivation statements and professional profiles. You will help individuals understand how to tailor their applications to different opportunities and employer expectations.
You will also design and deliver engaging small-group workshops on employability topics, including CV tailoring, cover letter writing and applications. Drawing on your understanding of graduate recruitment and selection, you will provide relevant, practical advice informed by current labour market trends and employer practices.
Working with undergraduates, taught Masters students and research students, including PhD students, you will contribute to research into recruitment practices and graduate labour market trends, sharing insights through student advice, workshops and online careers resources. You will collaborate with colleagues across UCL Careers, faculties and departments, as well as employers and alumni, and may contribute to careers events, sector-focused activities and wider projects.
Activities follow the main employer recruitment season. During the Autumn term, you will undertake approximately five hours of one-to-one student application advice appointments per day, reducing in Spring and Summer in line with student demand.
About you
You will have professional experience in careers and employability, graduate recruitment and selection, or a related field, with a strong understanding of the challenges students and graduates face entering the labour market.
You will have experience advising individuals on a one-to-one basis, building rapport and providing clear, constructive feedback to strengthen applications. You will also have experience planning and delivering small-group workshops or training, ideally covering CVs, cover letters, applications, interviews or graduate recruitment.
With an understanding of recruitment practices and employer expectations, you will provide credible, labour-market-informed advice. Experience engaging with employers, researching labour market trends or monitoring recruitment developments would be beneficial.
An excellent communicator, you will deliver advice with diplomacy and tact, including to students from diverse backgrounds and those whose first language may not be English. You will manage competing priorities effectively, particularly during peak recruitment periods, while maintaining a high standard of service.
Above all, you will take an inclusive, facilitative approach, empowering students and graduates to navigate recruitment independently. You will be collaborative, organised and committed to making a meaningful difference to their career development.
