Applications are invited for a temporary post of a UCD Post-doctoral Research Fellow Level 1 or 2 within UCD School of English, Drama and Film.

Applications are invited for a full-time, three-year postdoctoral fellowship to join a team working on a European Research Council-funded project entitled ‘Anticolonialism, Pan-Asianism, and Periodical Culture in Southeast Asia, c. 1850-1920’ (PanAsia).

Spanning three European empires (French, British, and Dutch) and five interconnected port cities (Singapore, Penang, Rangoon, Batavia, and Saigon), PanAsia is a five-year (2027-2032) study of the newspapers, journals, and magazines of nineteenth and early twentieth-century Southeast Asia (c. 1850-1920). The project’s primary objectives are, first, to compare the production of anticolonial periodical media by colonised peoples in multiple languages across the five maritime sites; second, to uncover transimperial and/or transnational print networks of anticolonial resistance between colonised peoples across the region; and third, to investigate how pan-Asian or shared Asian cultural values were used to mobilise anticolonial thinking and praxis.

In its first stage, PanAsia will focus on a) locating the relevant multilingual periodical corpus and obtaining permissions to publish or republish that corpus on the project website; b) designing and implementing a searchable and machine-readable database of relevant parts of the corpus; c) identifying and cross-referencing intertextual exchange within the corpus; d) identifying reprinted and/or syndicated articles across the corpus; and e) identifying periodical fiction across the corpus.
