Job Description

Job Title: Graduate 3D Design Assistant

Salary: £19,000 - £20,000 depending on skills and experience

Term: Fixed term appointment for 12 months but subject to possible extension

Responsible to: Design and Visualisation Manager

Purpose of Job: To provide practical support and specialist assistance with 3D design and visualisation technologies to businesses and other users of the 3MBIC

Key Responsibilities

Design and Visualisation

• Working with the design and visualisation manager on a range of research and commercial projects using 3D modelling skills and preparation of files for additive manufacturing and prototyping on behalf of clients.
• Liaising with clients both on and off site, to develop projects, provide information, results and feedback on projects ensuring work is correctly specified, completed on time, within budget and that the clients are kept informed of progress.
• Supporting events to present the unit’s work including participation in events promoting design and technology in schools, etc to increase interest in STEM subjects.

Additive Manufacturing

• Assistance if required with the operation, maintenance and management of safe use of additive manufacturing machines in the 3M BIC SLS, SLA, FDM and SLM.

The Byte

• Providing support to graduate and undergraduate students, 3M BIC tenants and network members in the Byte, the Centre’s digital maker space, including safety training, operational instruction, oversight of work, recording outputs, routine machine maintenance and liaison with engineers and colleagues when necessary to ensure all equipment is operational.
• Management of consumable stocks both for the Centre and clients.

General Duties

• Compliance with health and safety policies to ensure personal safety and that of others at all times.
• Any other duties commensurate with the level of the job that may become necessary from time to time.

Person Specification

Essential Requirements:

• Degree level qualification in product or 3D graphic design,
• Expertise in design software for example Solidworks, Autodesk products,
• Effective communication skills, particularly for client, student and visitor liaison, particularly for demonstration of technology,
• Accurate record keeping,
• Ability to work as part of a team and with colleagues from industry and academia, maintaining a professional approach at all times,
• Familiarity with health and safety policies and practices,
• Flexibility and a willingness to undertake or assist with a variety of team tasks to meet changing needs,
• Willingness to undergo formal and in-house training on other emerging technologies and software.

Desirable Skills:

• Familiarity with the use of generative design and topology optimisation software,
• An understanding Materialise Magics and machine control software,
• Experience of working in a design studio, laboratory and/or workshop as a technician,
• Experience of or interest in using 3-D printing.
