Applications are invited from a motivated biomedical scientist to undertake research in the field of neurodegeneration. You will work with Dr Dallas (University of Reading), and his close collaborators, Dr Kerrigan and Professor Randall (both University of Exeter).

The post holder will contribute to an exciting research project investigating the role of microglia in dementia funded by Alzheimer’s Research UK. The project will be split between 2 research centres (University of Reading and University of Exeter) and the post holder will be part of a strong collaborative team led by Dr Dallas from the School of Pharmacy, University of Reading. Growing evidence points towards the immune system playing a pivotal role in the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. Microglia have recently been proposed as potential therapeutic targets in order to tackle Alzheimer’s disease (see Wes et al., 2016, Glia). Specifically this project aims to functionally characterise for the first time, the impact of microglial ion channel function on calcium handling in Alzheimer’s disease. This work will be undertaken using both culture systems and Alzheimer’s disease animal models. The post is available immediately for a 20 month period in the first instance.   

You will be expected to deliver excellent research outputs that will generate research publications in leading neuroscience/life science journals. Responsibilities will include day to day management of research project, experimental data collection, and quantitative data analysis and reporting.

You will have:

  • A PhD in neuroscience or a relevant life science area (e.g. immunology).
  • Prior experience in electrophysiology.
  • Prior experience in molecular biological techniques.
  • Prior experience in functional imaging.
  • At least one research publication.
