Postdoctoral Research Fellow

University of Exeter - College of Life and Environmental Sciences, Geography

The College wishes to recruit a Research Fellow to participate in a NERC-funded research project entitled, “A coupled climate-vegetation-mammal-human model for simulating Late Quaternary megafaunal extinctions”. The project will investigate the cause of extinctions of large vertebrates (‘megafauna’) during the Late Quaternary, the most recent substantial extinction event in the geological record. Understanding the cause of the extinctions, and the factors influencing differential survival, provide baseline data and a unique historical analogue for addressing the current biodiversity crisis in the context of rapid climate change. The post is available from 1st December 2016 (or as soon as possible thereafter) to 30th November 2018 and based at the School of Geography, Streatham campus.

The post will ensure that a vegetation dispersal module is developed and integrated into LPJ-GUESS, and use data from Global Climate Models to derive scenarios for running LPJ-GUESS palaeovegetation experiments, to test hypotheses. The successful applicant will be able to develop research objectives, projects and proposals; identify sources of research funding and contribute to the process of securing funds and make presentations at conferences and other events.

The successful applicant will be a nationally recognised authority in ecological modelling and possess sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to develop research programmes and methodologies. The successful applicant will also be able to work collaboratively, supervise the work of others and act as team leader as required. Applicants need a good knowledge in a computer programming language (e.g. C/C++) and statistics, and have experience relevant to development of dispersal models, in using large / GCM datasets, and in use of HPC facilities would be desirable.
