Job Summary

The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Centre for Non-Communicable Diseases and Environmental Change (NCD) in Low-Middle Income Countries (LMIC), the School of Public Health and the Centre for Environmental Policy (CEP), have an exciting new opportunity for a Research Assistant to join an international team working on an ambitious project aimed at providing solutions for major health challenges related to environmental degradation in India, Indonesia, and Bangladesh. This role also presents an opportunity to work on other environmental modelling activities addressing similar challenges in an African context. 

This is an exciting post which will require you to have combined quantitative and qualitative research methods skills, with a keen interest in exploring and enhancing research in LMICs on the land use, food, water, and air quality nexus. In addition, you will support the development of new evidence-based tools by analysing existing human population and associated environmental data, whilst contributing to the design of sustainable dietary and heath interventions with a participatory component. 

Duties and responsibilities

You will contribute to the review and summaries of relevant literature for the project. You will collect, analyse, and interpret qualitative and quantitative data, making use of appropriate research methods and techniques (including very large datasets). You will assist in the preparation of assessment reports and papers for publications and workshops or conference presentations. 

In addition, you will contribute to the promotion and dissemination of the project and its outputs across the College and in external conference presentations. You will also contribute to project management, partner coordination and to keep accurate and up-to-date records of activities relating to the project. This will involve organising workshops, seminars, expert stakeholder engagement, among other meetings associated with the project. You will assist in the formulation, preparation, and submission of research funding applications in areas related to the project, and support with teaching and project supervision of MSc students. 

Essential requirements

  • You will hold MSc (or equivalent) postgraduate degree and experience in agriculture and/or bioenergy / biofuel management e.g. environmental economics, environmental engineering, environmental technology, science and policy, public health, or any other appropriate related discipline.
  • Experience of a range of analytical methods and modelling techniques: environmental impact assessment, socio-economic analysis, behavioural assessment, Life cycle assessment, systems modelling, policy analysis.
  • Experience of identification, collection, preparation, and analysis of environmental data.
  • Experience of working on collaborative projects, managing workshops, hosting meetings etc.
  • Have a broad grasp of agriculture-environment-bioeconomy issues affecting LMIC on food, nutrition, water, and waste management nexus.
  • Excellent written communication skills and the ability to write clearly and succinctly for publication.

Further Information

This is a full time, fixed term post for up to 12 months, with a possibility of an extension subject to funding availability. You will be based at South Kensington Campus. 

Due to funding constraints for this role, we can offer salary range only at £40,694 - £42,258 per annum. However, you will be eligible for incremental raises as per our standard pay scale for this grade.
