Professor of Rhetoric

Gresham College

Gresham College has provided free public lectures, seminars and conferences in the City of London for over 400 years. The Gresham Professors must be able to communicate with a public audience who will not normally have specialist expertise in the subject area but will be informed people with a thirst for increased knowledge and understanding. Applications are now invited for the post of Gresham Professor of Rhetoric. ‘Rhetoric’ traditionally includes the arts, humanities and social sciences and we are seeking applicants from those with academic expertise ranging from history, history of art, literature, architecture and design - to philosophy, classics and the social sciences

The appointment is part-time from 1 August 2017 and normally for three years. Gresham Professors must present six scripted one-hour lectures each academic year. Attendance at Academic Board meetings four times per year and some social events is also expected. The lectures attract large numbers of people and are also available through the internet, so candidates should have an interest in reaching a global public audience. The College pays an annual stipend of £7,000 (plus reasonable expenses).

In addition to the above Gresham Professorship, opportunities may be available for a number of part time Visiting Professorships at Gresham College, tenable from August 2017 for a period of 1 – 2 years (renewable). Visiting Professors will be expected to deliver three lectures each year during their term of appointment. As above, applications in disciplines within the arts, humanities and social sciences will be considered.

Informal discussion may take place with the Academic Registrar,
