The Institute for Communication Systems (ICS) and the School of Health Sciences at the University of Surrey are seeking to recruit a full-time researcher for a fixed 14 months term. The researcher will join a multidisciplinary group working on the Internet of Things for dementia care (TIHM) and other healthcare and active aging related projects. The group’s research in this domain is currently funded by NHS/Innovate UK and the European Commission.

The Institute for Communication Systems (ICS) has a wide variety of research projects related to future Internet and future Web systems, information/data centric networks, large-scale data analytics, machine learning and Internet of Things (IoT). ICS is an internationally renowned research institute with an excellent infrastructure and academic and industry links. It is also the home of the 5G Innovation Centre (5GIC) at the University of Surrey.
The School of Health Sciences is a multi-professional teaching and research centre generating improvements in healthcare practice through high-quality education, partnership working, practice development and research.
The researcher will be based at the Institute for Communication Systems/5G Innovation Centre (5GIC) at the University of Surrey working with Dr Payam Barnaghi (http://personal.ee.surrey.ac.uk/Personal/P.Barnaghi/) and his colleagues in the related projects. The group has a strong track record in the Internet of Things, semantic technologies and data analytics and also has significant research experience in application development and use-cases in smart cities and healthcare domains. The university has state-of-the-art research facilities such as large-scale experimental test-beds, including an IoT for dementia test-bed and a clinical lab for test and training the technology solutions. The institute also provides excellent computing facilities and close links with industry (around 50 industrial partners worldwide). You will join an established research group within a strong track record and excellent computing and software infrastructure for first class research.
This role will contribute to the design and implementation of data analytics and machine learning solutions for an Internet of Things platform for healthcare. The technical work will involve application development and developing machine learning and analytics solutions for processing the healthcare data.
The researcher will develop demonstrators and prototypes for IoT healthcare test-bed integration and IoT data management. The ideal candidate is expected to have research experiences in the following areas:
- Data and knowledge engineering
- Machine learning and data analytics
- Internet of Things and related technologies
The following skills and experiences will be considered for this post.
- Experience working with two or more from the following: web application development, Unix/Linux environments, mobile application development, and distributed and parallel systems.
- Interest and ability to learn other coding languages as needed.
- Strong research and analytical skills.
- Being familiar with networking technologies and protocols.
- Proven track record of innovation supported by publications in high ranked journals and conferences.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
