Job Description
EMBL is looking for a Strategy and Analysis Manager to lead activities in strategic planning, reporting and policy within its Strategy and Communications team. You will work alongside writers, designers, web producers and communicators, promoting the work of EMBL at its six sites in Europe. We are an international, friendly and supportive team, with ties to scientists and professionals throughout EMBL and to the broader science communication community. This position is based in Heidelberg, Germany.

The position includes the following tasks and responsibilities:

  • Supporting EMBL leadership in developing institutional and scientific strategy, in particular in the context of the 5-year EMBL Programmes and Indicative Schemes
  • Researching and developing EMBL’s position on relevant science policy topics in collaboration with International Relations and other parts of EMBL
  • Drafting strategy, policy and scientific reports
  • Researching topics of strategic interest to EMBL to develop proposals for new initiatives or scientific internal policies
  • Overseeing institutional analysis, data collection, reporting and benchmarking
  • Identifying, developing and maintaining key indicators of performance and impact of the organisation
  • Effectively summarising, presenting and visualising organisational data and indicators for diverse communication outlets, including presentations, reports and digital communication
  • Defining the reporting requirements of the organisation to inform the updating of existing and the establishing of new reporting systems at EMBL
  • Monitoring and reporting on the activities of the Strategy and Communications team
  • Supporting communications activities of EMBL leadership, including preparing presentations, speeches and briefings
  • Supervising, mentoring and developing interns, including recruiting, training and succession planning

Qualifications and Experience
As our ideal candidate, you will have a degree in life sciences and professional experience in the area of research-related project management, science management or communication in an international setting.

You will have excellent organisational, analytical, writing and communication skills. You will have a passion for life science research and be interested in the political aspects of scientific strategy. We are looking for someone who is capable of quickly grasping complex concepts and communicating them effectively to different target audiences, ranging from scientists to policy-makers to the media.

With outstanding interpersonal skills, you will be flexible, energetic and able to work as part of a dynamic team as well as independently. The abilities to work to deadlines and handle a number of tasks simultaneously are essential.

An excellent command of spoken and written English is necessary; knowledge of French, Italian, Spanish and/or German is an asset. Experience working in an international environment or communicating with an international audience is desirable.
