Research Fellow: Intangible Cultural Heritage

Salary: £32,004 - £38,183 per annum dependent on skills and experience.

Grade: UH7

FTE: Full Time, working 37 hours per week (1.0 FTE)

Duration of Contract: 5 years from October 2017

Qualifications required:

The successful candidate will have a doctoral degree in History and/or Heritage, and will have experience of, or enthusiasm for, research engagement beyond academia.

Description of the research activity and area:

The Fellow will be working in the field of ‘intangible cultural heritage’, which, as defined by UNESCO, includes the oral traditions, folklore, ceremonies, rituals, and customs of everyday life in the past and present, and the ways in which communities maintain and manage their culture and heritage. Candidates with interests in the areas of ethnicity and transnational migrations of peoples, cultures and ideas are particularly welcome.

The Fellow will bolster the research base of the History Group and actively support the work of the University’s Heritage Hub. Over the last six years the Heritage Hub, which is located in the School of Humanities, and is led by History staff, has built up a national reputation for its approach to working with community groups, heritage organisations, and businesses.

The successful candidate will undertake a light teaching load. They will be expected to be proactive in seeking external funding to develop and expand their research. The successful candidate will also produce a portfolio of publications for the next REF that meets the high standards expected by the History Group.

Skills and experience needed:

The Fellow should have relevant conceptual and methodological knowledge, should be conducting research in the field of intangible cultural heritage and should have a clear and developed plan for future research and grant capture. The Fellow will have the skills to contribute to the research culture of the History group through the organization of events and the development of collaborations with colleagues and external partners. They should have experience of disseminating research findings in oral and written formats and to scholarly and general audiences. Experience of engaging directly or working with public audiences would be desirable. The successful candidate will contribute to the Heritage Studies pathway and modules covering the practice and methodologies of history. All colleagues in the History Group must demonstrate an ability to teach across a broad range of historical topics. At a personal level, the Fellow must be approachable and will be able to establish good working relationships with colleagues, collaborators and students.
