Research Technician

University of Bristol - School of Physics

The School of Physics is looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated individual to join our team of research technicians and engineers in supporting experimental research across the School.

You will provide technical support to experimental physics research activities in the School, working closely with academic and technical staff as well as students, in the design development, construction, maintenance, use and trouble-shooting of experimental apparatus.

You will be working in an interesting and rewarding environment, using your initiative and deploying a wide range of skills: from general engineering such as milling, fitting & lathe work; to design and debugging. Your tasks will include the repair, maintenance and modification of various pieces of equipment, as well as the development, production and commissioning of bespoke, innovative items. You should already have skills in some of the following: vacuum systems, laser systems, x-ray equipment, electronics, machining; and a willingness and aptitude to learn more (training for additional skills will be provided).

You will work closely with other members of technical and research staff, while having a high degree of independence. You will also train others in the use of various types of equipment, and you will sustain high standards of safety within the School’s labs and workshops.

Ideally you will have a technical background and be educated to HND or first degree level in physics, engineering or similar subject, with appropriate work experience. You should be capable of working from drawings or basic concept designs, but also able to produce finished products without drawings when required.

You will be good at multi-tasking with the ability to think laterally and stay focused. You will have good interpersonal skills and a track record of working well in a team. You will have a practical aptitude for solving technical problems and fixing equipment and a history of delivering technical products to specification.

The post is full-time.

Informal enquiries to Bob Wiltshire, Technical Research Manager, r.wiltshire@bristol.ac.uk or Steve Neck, Technical Manager steve.neck@bristol.ac.uk.

The University is committed to creating and sustaining a fully inclusive culture.  We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and communities.
