Scientific Manager

University of Oxford - Oxford Big Data Institute, Li Ka Shing Centre for Health Information and Discovery

Old Road Campus, Oxford

We are looking to appoint a Scientific Manager to join the new Oxford Big Data Institute (BDI), based at the University of Oxford. This is an exciting opportunity to join the team at the BDI, which is focussed on analysis of biomedical big data, and generation of health knowledge and information.

As Scientific Manager you will report to Professor Christophe Fraser, and will be based in the Pathogen Dynamics group at the BDI. You will have a passion for science, public health and public communications, and have experience of project management and scientific communication. You will have a PhD degree in a relevant biological, biomedical or mathematical sciences or related subject.

You will be responsible for project management and communications management across a range of ongoing and new projects. You will write accessible summary reports about research papers, research discussions, and research workshops. You will develop and implement communication strategies for different projects, organise events for the public, develop and edit websites, help organise workshops and events both at Oxford and elsewhere.

You will be a dynamic communicator. You will foster links with researchers in the Fraser group, with other members of the BDI, and with other researchers in consortia, with funders, and with the wider community of stakeholders.

You will contribute to the success of projects focussed on major human infectious diseases, such as HIV/AIDS and antibiotic resistant bacterial infections. The group uses a combination of cutting-edge DNA sequencing and analysis, and mathematical modelling and computer simulations. Much of this research is carried out with international collaborative consortia, including researchers with very wide range of specialist backgrounds and geographic locations.

An appointment to Grade 7 (£31,076 - £38,183 p.a.) will be considered with appropriate adjustment in duties for a candidate who is less experienced and who is not ready to take on all of the responsibilities described in the job description, but has a proven ability and motivation to deliver on communications, coordination and/or project management aspects of the post.

This full-time position is fixed-term for 2 years in the first instance.

Further particulars, including details of how to apply, can be obtained from the document below. Applications for this vacancy should be made online and you will be required to upload a CV and supporting statement as part of your application.

The closing date for this post is 12.00 noon on Friday 8 September 2017.
