Lecturer/Associate Professor in Civil Engineering

Xi'an Jiaotong - Liverpool University – Department of Civil Engineering

Applications are invited to the Department of Civil Engineering at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University. The Department of Civil Engineering is a research-led department that aspires to educate future civil engineers that will design and manage construction projects, committed to professional responsibility and sustainable development. Since its establishment in 2010, the Department has achieved significant milestones including the accreditation of all of its undergraduate and postgraduate programmes by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM), making it the first Sino-British University in China offering JBM-accredited programmes at both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees levels. The Department also operates a doctoral degree (Ph.D.) programme, where Ph.D. students are supervised by faculty members in their specialty areas.

XJTLU is located in the Higher Education Town of Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP), well-connected via nearby airports to cities such as Hong Kong, Seoul, Tokyo, and Taipei, and via high-speed rail to other major cities in China. XJTLU aims to become truly research-led, and has committed significant investment into research development and the expansion of the Ph.D. research community on campus.    

The Department of Civil Engineering aims to provide professional academic training of a JBM accredited degree course which focuses on the core subjects of structures, hydraulics, geotechnics, materials, surveying and project management. The Department is continuously developing research areas in the sustainable development of Civil Engineering. The Department currently offers two BEng undergraduate degree programmes in Civil Engineering and Architectural Engineering and two MSc degree programmes in Civil Engineering and Sustainable Construction.

The Department welcomes applications in all areas of Civil Engineering but specifically encourages experience in environmental engineering and fluid mechanics for the position of Lecturer/Associate Professor. The successful candidate should generally be able to:

  • Engage actively in the learning and teaching activities of civil engineering and related programmes;
  • Contribute to the further enhancement of research performance and outputs;
  • Provide administrative contributions to the department and University.

The successful candidate should specifically be able to:


  • Engage actively in research activities as evidenced for example by publication, grant income, and supervision of doctoral students;
  • Deliver high quality and effective teaching, as evidenced for example by peers, students and external examiners;
  • Contribute to the management of departmental activities.

Associate Professor

  • Engage actively in and sustain research activities as evidenced for example by publication in international peer reviewed journals, research grant income, and supervision of doctoral students to completion;
  • Show evidence of international recognition in the research subject area (such as membership of editorial and advisory boards, award of prizes, and invitations to contribute at conferences);
  • Provide research leadership within the Department;
  • Be responsible for the implementation of aspects of University strategy relating to learning and teaching, as evidence for example by contributions to the management of learning and teaching within the Department and/or University, and significant development of curricula and/or assessment practices;
  • Demonstrate evidence of external recognition for teaching and assessment;
  • Normally have substantial learning and teaching experience or relevant learning and teaching qualification for example through completion of a recognised qualification in the practice of learning and teaching at higher education level;
  • Deliver high quality and effective teaching, as evidenced for example by peers, students and external examiners;
  • Provide effective Leadership within the departmental context.

The candidate has to be a strong team player and self-motivated individual with good interpersonal and relationship building skills and high standards of professionalism. The post holder should also have a good research record, an international research profile, promoting and delivering high quality teaching and research as well as the skills to develop research links with external organisations. The post holder will be expected to enhance XJTLU’s excellence in research and teaching in the area of civil engineering.

The candidate will have PhD degree and experience in civil engineering or an appropriate field. The post holder should normally have professional qualification and membership of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) or Institution of Structural Engineers (IstructE) or equivalent.

The salary range is 20,570 – 31,622 RMB /month (Lecturer) and 32,101 – 43,823 RMB /month (Associate Professor). In addition, members of academic staff are entitled to accommodation and travel allowances, medical insurance, and relocation expenses. Overseas staff may receive a tax-free salary of up to three years, depending on nationality and personal circumstances.
