Imperial College Advanced Hackspace Fellow

Imperial College London - Dyson School of Design Engineering/Advanced Hackspace

Campus: South Kensington and White City Campuses

Fixed-term appointment available for 12 months in the first instance.

Since its creation in 2014, the Imperial College Advanced Hackspace (ICAH) has created a unique environment for students and staff to engage in community-driven prototyping and disruptive technology development. ICAH aims to connect innovators and inventors with the tools and expertise they need to realise their creative ideas. The rapid growth of the Hackspace network over the last three years – 2,000 members to date, with another 100 joining every month – demonstrates the demand for this resource amongst the College and its flourishing start-up community.

To continue to grow, and to build on ICAH's existing achievements, Imperial College has recently built a new £4.5M permanent 2000m2 engagement and creativity hub: The Invention Rooms. This facility is based at the new 25-acre Imperial College White City Campus (right next to White City underground station) which aims to co-locate scientists, industry partners, and entrepreneurs, to speed the translation of scientific breakthroughs into societal benefit.

This is a unique venture, unprecedented both in terms of scale and ambition within a university environment and includes a bio-wet lab, woodwork/metalwork/electronics workshops, a digital manufacturing studio, and a design studio. These cutting-edge facilities will be linked directly to an expo-centre/café next door and hot-desking/hot-house space on the floor above: complementing the manufacturing spaces that already operate under ICAH’s umbrella. ICAH now constitutes one of the largest prototyping networks in the world and our aim is nothing short of becoming the best place in the world to turn ideas into working prototypes.

In addition, we are looking to enhance our dynamic team of Hackspace fellows. We are recruiting for a fellow who will lead on large-scale Hackathons. The Hackathon lead will liaise with corporate partners (and Imperial’s corporate partnership team) and other entities to identify, develop, and deliver large-scale ideation and prototyping events. The fellow will have a further role in supporting student-led hackathons.
