A fixed term postdoctoral appointment is available for 16 months in the Wolfson Atmospheric Chemistry Laboratories, part of the Department of Chemistry, to support the National Centre for Atmospheric Sciences activities in understanding air pollution in countries which are, or could be, in receipt of UK official development assistance.

Using the GEOS-Chem model of atmospheric chemistry and transport in various nested grid configurations, you will use observations collected by NCAS and WACL and other groups over Africa, China and India to understand the processes controlling air pollution in these regions, evaluate air pollution emissions inventories, and investigate air quality mitigation strategies. A significant volume of data processing will be required to convert both model and observational output into a useable form and to analyse the model results in innovative frameworks.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

You will have a significant experience of running the GEOS-Chem model, or equivalent, and making changes to the model, an ability to develop and evaluation emissions inventories, and a capability to develop a research strategy for evaluation air quality policy options. A proven history of exploiting and manipulating observational data within python (or equivalent) is also required

You will also have:

  • Highly developed communication skills including competency to make presentations at conferences
  • Ability and experience of writing up research work for publication
  • Ability and experience of developing research objectives, projects and proposals and conducting research projects

You are expected to have an appropriate PhD level qualification commensurate with the job description for the post. As well as being suitable for candidates with a background in chemistry, this appointment would also equally suit you if you have an appropriate background in Physics or Engineering.

The post is fixed-term for an initial period of 16 months, with the possibility of extension, and will be available from 1st December 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Salary from £31,604 - £32,548 on grade 6 of the University’s salary scales.
