Research Assistant/Associate in Civil Engineering

University of Cambridge - Department of Engineering

Central Cambridge

A position exists, for a Research Assistant/Research Associate in the Department of Engineering, to work on EPSRC funded project "Concrete modelled using random elements". The Research Assistant/Associate will work on a new computational method for the analysis and optimisation of reinforced concrete structures. Much of the difficulty of analysis for concrete lies in its brittle behaviour. We aim to tackle the challenge of reinforced concrete optimisation using a new, mesh-free, analytical tool known as Peridynamics. This post will advance our work in this field through theoretical developments and laboratory experimentation. The role holder will participate in the overall contribution of the department/faculty, as appropriate.

The post holder will be located in Central Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, UK.

The key responsibilities and duties are:

  • Theoretical developments in the field of peridynamics for concrete structures
  • Computational modelling using bespoke programs for accuracy and speed
  • Laboratory testing, as required to support analytical advances

The skills, qualifications, and experience required:

  • Applicants must have (or be close to obtaining) a PhD in Civil Engineering or a relevant related field
  • The research assistant/associate should have expertise in mesh-free modelling techniques. Expertise in computer science and an understanding of programming are highly desirable. Knowledge of laboratory methods and experimental ability are desirable.
  • Very good communication and writing skills
  • Experience working in a relevant industry is desirable
  • Experience of managing own workload, sticking to deadlines and the ability to constantly update knowledge

Salary ranges:

Research Assistant: £25,728 - £30,688

Research Associate: £31,604 - £38,833
