The Post

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Application Development Team within Business Applications and Integrations for a Developer – you will join a dynamic, project-orientated development environment, where you will be involved in the full development life cycle of new functionality and enhancements to core business applications and new system implementations; from requirements definition through to design, development, testing, deployment and ultimately providing 3rd level support for these applications and systems.

Reporting directly to the Application Development Team Leader, you will be a key member of a team at a time when we are looking to bring about transformational change in the way we do things to support the University’s highly ambitious strategic plan.

The role requires an individual with strong technical skills and excellent problem solving and analysis skills. You must be highly self-sufficient, motivated to learn fast, be a team player and add value and provide a positive contribution to our team to ensure that the development team continue to produce the highest quality end results on some of the University’s most high profile projects and continuous improvement activity. You will be able to demonstrate initiative and drive in carrying out tasks and are constantly seeking improvement. You will be required to liaise both with technical colleagues as well as project managers and stakeholders at all levels and you must be able to communicate with technical and non-technical stakeholders. You will have proven experience of working in a project-orientated software development environment.

Description of Duties

  • Design, develop, test, implement and document technical solutions from University level projects to smaller scale projects and tasks addressing complex individual business problems.
  • Support, maintain, continually improve and document existing technical solutions responding to changing business requirements, changing technology or other improvements that produce efficiencies in business or technical processes.
  • Undertake information gathering and requirement analysis using a variety of approaches such as leading workshops, large group discussions and one to one interviews with business experts.
  • Provide and maintain technical documentation for new and existing solutions as resource for colleagues within IT services.
  • Adhere to prescribed architectural principles, development methodologies, coding standards and source control practices, and to contribute to the on-going development of such standards and practises.
  • Take a pro-active approach to stakeholder engagement and consultation.
  • Provide sound technical advice to complex system problems, recommending courses of action to be taken and monitoring their execution.
  • Provide system training to operational support teams, provide support of new systems during implementation and handover.
  • Provide high quality, timeous and succinct advice to the Head of Business Applications and other senior colleagues.
  • Build a strong professional partnership and work collaboratively with colleagues within Business Applications team, Information Services and the wider university teams.
  • Actively engage with internal and external professional networks in order to identify innovation and best-practice to inform the development of the service.
  • Be a positive role model and ambassador for Business Application Development and Integrations, the Information Services Directorate and the wider University.
  • Undertake additional duties appropriate to the role
