The Faculty of Education in central Cambridge wishes to appoint a full-time Research Associate, starting in January 2018, to work on an international project "Responsive Models for Early Childhood Care and Education in India"

The aim of the project is to generate contextually-responsive models of Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) for disadvantaged communities in India. The research involves analysing the social and cultural practices of ECCE in both family/community settings and in ECCE institutional environments. The research is located in the two Indian states of Tamil Nadu and Bihar. The project is interested in the interactions between economic, political, cultural and psycho-social factors in models of early childhood development.

You will make key contributions to the qualitative components of the project, bringing expertise in Childhood Studies; and will be responsible for supporting holistically the research needs of the project, from literature review, political economy analysis of ECCE in the two states, analysis of secondary and primary data, preparation of presentations, drafting blogs, policy briefs and academic papers. You will work collaboratively with the international research partners and undertake trips to India for research purposes, including supporting the design and piloting of research instruments, site visits, and country engagement meetings with research partners and key policy stakeholders. You will also liaise with team members responsible for quantitative and qualitative analyses and will lead specific research outputs under the direction of Dr Arathi Sriprakash. You will engage with the project management to ensure timely production of outputs, keeping track of delivery towards these outputs, and contributing to reporting.

The successful candidate will have a PhD in Sociology, Anthropology, Education, Psychology or related discipline with knowledge of debates and literature in childhood studies; evidence of strong interest in and understanding of the research topic; experience in qualitative data analysis, with a strong understanding of ethnographic methodologies, and ability to work with mixed research methods; evidence of drafting reports and contributing to writing for academic publication to a high standard; the ability to write blogs and policy briefs and prepare Powerpoint presentations for wider audiences; good organisational and interpersonal skills and the ability to liaise with a range of professionals across diverse settings, including evidence of project management and/or event management; and, the capacity to manage own their workload and work independently to tight deadlines within guidelines provided.
