Principal Investigator in Human Physiology and Experimental Medicine in the MRC Metabolic Diseases Unit, Wellcome Trust-MRC Institute of Metabolic Science

University of Cambridge - Department of Clinical Biochemistry

A position is available for an independent clinician scientist to lead a programme of research in human physiology and experimental medicine within the University of Cambridge's MRC Metabolic Diseases Unit.  Depending on experience this person may be appointed as a Programme Leader or a Programme Leader Track.  The position comes with an attractive research funding package that is renewable every 5 years.  The University of Cambridge will appoint the post holder to a research position at the level appropriate to the career stage of the successful applicant.

The University of Cambridge has made a strategic commitment to supporting human integrative physiology and experimental medicine within its MRC Metabolic Diseases Unit and Metabolic Research Laboratories (, led by Professor Sir Stephen O'Rahilly FRS.  We seek expressions of interest from clinician scientists at all stages of their independent career who wish to pursue an internationally leading programme of research, which at least in part, involves the utilization and development of state-of-the-art methodologies for the in vivo evaluation of human physiology, relevant to common metabolic disease.  Experience in the study of disorders such as obesity, diabetes, fatty liver or hyperlipidaemia and expertise in technologies such as the study of metabolic fluxes, energetics or muscle function would be advantageous, as would enthusiasm to engage, either directly or in collaboration, in mechanistic studies of novel pharmacological agents and other forms of human experimental medicine. Experience in the recruitment and study of patients with a range of metabolic disorders would be ideal.

The Wellcome Trust-MRC Institute of Metabolic Science (IMS), of which the Metabolic Research Laboratories with its embedded MRC Metabolic Diseases Unit is a component, is one of world's leading institutes devoted to the study of obesity, diabetes, endocrine and related metabolic disease. There are dedicated, staffed and core-supported clinical research facilities for human in vivo physiological studies together with chamber calorimeters and a body composition suite in the adjacent NIHR/Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Facility (CRF). The campus has facilities for human imaging including 7T MRI, an on-site cyclotron plus PET-CT and MR, as well as 3T MRI dedicated to metabolic imaging linked to the CRF. The campus is supported by a generous grant from NIHR which supports core facilities for biochemical assays including by mass spectrometry, metabolomics, and stem cells as well as core support staff for the CRF. The IMS is situated on the Cambridge Biomedical campus, one of the world's most vibrant centres of biomedical research, which includes the University of Cambridge's Clinical School, two major hospitals, the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, and the world headquarters of Astra Zeneca.

We seek expressions of interest from clinician scientists at career stages equivalent to Assistant Professor (Intermediate Fellow/Clinician Scientist) through to full Professor. Interested parties should send a 1-2 page expression of interest and a copy of their curriculum vitae to Maria Adams ( and Chris Ford ( Informal enquiries to Steve O'Rahilly ( are welcome.
