The University of Birmingham is committed to engineering excellence and as part of its strategic plan, it has recently announced investment in a new £65m signature building for the School.  This is in addition to two externally funded prestigious awards of £28.1m and £21.6m which the School is involved with, and will result in the creation of two centers of excellence.  We are now seeking to appoint a highly research active Structural Engineer at Lecturer and Senior Lecturer level in order to help us shape the future.

The School has a history of undertaking world class research and is proud of the strong and extensive links with industry which ensure that research is rapidly translated into practice, whilst creating long lasting impact. The School boasts a creative and dynamic environment, which provides opportunities for both staff and students to develop. To build additional capacity in Civil Engineering, and as part of our long-term strategy, we are looking to appoint excellent, enthusiastic and motivated academics.

Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate the capability to initiate and conduct high quality research.  It is expected that the research interests of candidates will align with the current research groups within the School of Engineering, particularly around Structural Engineering although we will consider excellent candidates in closely aligned fields.

It is expected that the appointee will have excellent communication skills and the ability to undertake inspirational teaching.  Successful candidates will be expected to be able to teach at undergraduate and postgraduate level across core subjects in mechanical engineering, and to supervise final year undergraduate and postgraduate Masters projects. We are particularly interested in candidates with teaching experience in engineering design, Structural Engineering and/or Materials Engineering. All appointments will be made on merit.

Candidates will be expected to have a first degree in engineering, a relevant doctoral qualification and be able to demonstrate their commitment to Civil/Structural Engineering.

The positions are available to candidates requiring part-time and flexible working.

Informal enquiries about the post may be made to Professor Nigel Cassidy, Head of Department of Civil Engineering (Telephone: 0121 414 5146; e-mail n.j.cassidy@bham.ac.uk)
