Database and Web Developer

We are establishing a Software Support Group which will facilitate the development of bespoke research software and solutions across the ICR. We are seeking an experienced database developer with strong web skills who is interested in working in a research environment.

You are expected to work alongside researchers on one or two projects at a time as well as provide support and maintenance for past projects. While not essential, experience of working in a research environment would be advantageous. You will have a good first degree or Masters (or equivalent) or a PhD (or equivalent) in computer science, software engineering, informatics, physics, mathematics, biology or a closely related field. You will use and promote modern software development practices and contribute to our training portfolio.

You will have experience in building, deploying and maintaining data driven web sites. Experience of designing and administering databases (e.g. MySQL) is essential Experience in creating web interfaces to databases is highly desirable. You must have experience of software development under Linux or Mac and ideally, under Windows. Knowledge of all or some of the following: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, apache, tomcat, nginx, flask, git, Python, PHP is essential.

Additionally, you will have a proven track record of delivering database and/or web solutions, a professional approach, an analytical, logical and quick learning mind, a ‘can do’ attitude with the ability to communicate clearly and effectively with fellow developers and scientists alike.

You will be part of the Scientific Computing Team and also expected to work independently and within a project framework. You will report to the Scientific Software Lead who will manage the portfolio of projects and provide general guidance and support.

The post is for two years in the first instance. The post will be based in Sutton and will also be required to work regularly at the ICR’s Chelsea site.
