The salary will be paid at Grade 6, £33,518 to £39,992 per annum, plus £2,923 per annum London Allowance.

This post will be Fixed Term for two years.

The antibody discovery group at St. John’s Institute of Dermatology wishes to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate (Grade 6) with experience in cancer immunology/immunotherapy, antibody engineering or equivalent, immune or antibody functional assays and in vivo models of cancer, to join its established Antibodies for Cancer translational research programme. This programme is specifically focused on development of novel IgE-based cancer therapeutics and their evaluation for commercialization. The positions are funded by a new KCL spinout company, IGEM Therapeutics Ltd, and will involve antibody engineering, development of novel in vivo models and in vitro/ex vivo antibody functional assays. The programme will be conducted to specific deliverables and strict deadlines, thus these posts will suit a highly-motivated and focused team player with a keen interest in translational antibody immunotherapy for cancer.

The work will be integrated into on-going activities dedicated to antibody discovery, evaluation and translation for the treatment of solid tumours, led by Dr. Sophia Karagiannis, who is also the founder scientist of IGEM Therapeutics Ltd. The group’s activities include dissecting components contributing to the cross-talk between human immunity and cancer and utilising this knowledge to discover and evaluate antibodies as diagnostics or therapeutics. Current programmes include the translation of our lead IgE antibody candidate to first-in-man clinical studies with clinical and academic colleagues at Guy’s Hospital. The post will benefit from the translational and clinical activities of St. John’s Institute of Dermatology and close interactions with colleagues at the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust and King's College London, providing access to state of the art infrastructure including Flow Cytometry/Sorting, Imaging and Genomics Core facilities.

The successful candidate will have background and experience in antibody and/or cellular immunology, cancer immunology and/or immunotherapy or related discipline, and in vivo models of cancer preferably featuring human immune cell engraftment. Experience in flow cytometry/flow sorting is essential and antibody engineering skills are desirable. Experience in antibody functions for cancer therapy in the context of human immunity, including knowledge of IgE functions and immunology are highly desirable.

The post-holder will focus on establishment of novel functional evaluations, engineering approaches and implementation of in vivo cancer models. They will be responsible for data analyses, assist with supervision of students and junior staff, contribute to report, grant application and manuscript writing and present research findings at scientific meetings. The post-holder is expected to work closely and effectively with the Postdoctoral Research Fellow appointed to this programme, with group members, IGEM Therapeutics staff and external collaborators. They will interact with our academic and clinical collaborators in Dermatology/Genetics, Cancer Studies and Allergy. Therefore, communication and collaborative skills are essential.
