PR and Communications Officer

The PR and Communications Officer is an integral role in the delivery of the communications media engagement of the university. Working to and with the Communications Manager and relevant colleagues you will support the delivery and evaluation of sector leading, multi-channel PR and communication campaigns and activity that effectively position and promote the university to achieve its key objectives.

The role holder will plan, develop and implement different PR and communication strategies to respond to a range of issues and opportunities. This will involve proactively positioning university messages, spokespeople, researching, writing and distributing press releases to targeted media, across all forms of media spanning TV, radio, press and digital in order to reach target audiences in order to build, maintain and manage the university’s reputation.

The role holder will develop highly productive, operational relationships with key journalists across local, regional and national media to gain exposure, share stories and key messages. As and when required the role holder will need to attend events across academic, student and stakeholder activity for media engagement purposes.

The role holder will develop and nurture positive working relationships with colleagues across the university, specifically in relation to producing content, case studies and stories for internal and external use across press, media channels and partner organisations. Further to this actively look to repurpose, place or develop relevant content on internal or external digital platforms, including maintaining and updating information on the university website, intranet and on social media sites such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

A strong news sense is essential, as is the ability to work effectively with senior management, key stakeholders, academics, colleagues and students. Duties include writing and distributing press releases, responding to incoming media enquiries, photography, video and production of content for the public-facing website, intranet and other media/social media channels. A degree of flexibility is required, with the ability to occasionally cover out-of-hours events.

The Communications team is part of the central University CMRA (Communications, Marketing, Recruitment and Admissions) department and the post-holder will be expected to contribute to the wider team, providing support to student recruitment and marketing activities including open days/evenings.

The ideal candidate will be NCTJ qualified or similar and have experience of working within a busy, in-house communications team or newsroom.
