The UK Collaboratorium on Research Infrastructure and Cities (UKCRIC – has been established to enable the UK to develop a world class national infrastructure research capability to inform the UK’s infrastructure development agenda. Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) one of the seven research councils in the UK with world-renown track records in building, delivering, and operating large science facilities, is responsible for the construction and delivery programme for the Data Analytics Facility for National Infrastructure (DAFNI) one of the three strands of UKCRIC with an investment of £8M.

About The Role

The aim of DAFNI is to provide new data intensive hardware and software platform to accelerate significant new advances in infrastructure system modelling, simulation and visualisation research. DAFNI is the first of its kind in the UK and globally dedicated to complex infrastructure systems research using advanced computational techniques for the research community. The community is multidisciplinary by nature, comprising of disciplinary specialists from geography, civil engineering, scientific computing and environment science and engineering.

To enable DAFNI to be a success we are looking for a Project Manager to deliver DAFNI. You will be working closely with the Project Director and Technical Architect in developing and evolving the project plan throughout the delivery process.

You will be based at the Visual Analytics and Imaging Systems (VAIS) group of STFC Scientific Computing Department, working with a R and D team of software engineers, mathematicians, visualisation and image analysis specialists and data scientists. List of Duties/Work Programme/Responsibilities

  • Project management for DAFNI
  • Attend to general project matters when required
  • Reporting on all aspects of the DAFNI using written reports and presentations
  • Reporting of project finances and schedule
  • Provide advice and training on project management matters to junior members of staff
  • Working with external customers and other STFC staff, when required
  • Teamwork with technical specialists within STFC
  • You will report directly to the DAFNI Project Director
  • Highly organised with good time management skills
  • Ability to talk confidently to technical specialists and gain the trust of team members
  • Should be able to adapt and respond to changing situations
  • Ability to learn quickly
  • High level of self-motivation and drive and capable of motivating others
  • Effective written and verbal communication.

Any other Relevant Information

You must be available to travel occasionally in the UK and overseas to attend conferences and workshops.

About You

You must have a recognised project management qualification or relevant expertise and experience of managing project(s) of more than £1M GBP.

You must have experience of making project recommendations to technical teams.

You will have Software or Systems Engineering background with work experience in a research environment or public sector.

Experience working in an Agile environment for software delivery and facilitation skills for group collaborations and discussions would also be desirable as well as experience of improving project management processes.
