This new full-time post is available immediately on a fixed-term basis until 28 September 2018 in the College of Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences.

The Post

The College wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Associate or Postdoctoral Research Fellow to support the work of Dr Sam Weller on a project funded through the Supergen UKCMER - Wave Energy Scotland Flex Fund.

Pathways to reduce the cost of energy are currently being sought in order to make wave, tidal and floating wind technologies commercial. The development of low cost and reliable mooring systems requires the specification of mooring components with appropriate factors of safety for the application. Whilst considerable learning can be gained from the use of synthetic materials in the offshore sector, differences in scale and the functional requirements of the mooring system mean that marine renewable energy (MRE) device load cases present an entirely different set of operating conditions. The main aim of this project will be to reduce performance and reliability uncertainties of synthetic mooring ropes for the station keeping of highly dynamic offshore structures including MRE devices. This will be achieved through the development of a detailed analytical model that will be capable of simulating the time-dependent, non-linear behaviour of synthetic ropes subjected to complex load cases for use in commercial mooring system software.

The post will include the assessment of parameter estimation and modelling techniques leading to the development of an analytical model and will utilise previously captured experimental test data as well as the knowledge and expertise of industrial project partners. Applicants will have experience in the fields of ocean technology, numerical modelling, physical testing and data analysis and also be skilled in project management. The successful applicant will be able to present information on research progress and outcomes, communicate complex information orally, in writing and electronically, and prepare proposals and applications to external bodies.

 About you

Applicants will be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the discipline and of research techniques to work within established research programmes. At Postdoctoral Research Fellow level, the successful applicant will be a nationally recognised authority in Ocean Technology and be able to develop research programmes and methodologies. The successful applicant will also be able to work collaboratively, supervise the work of others and act as team leader as required.

The successful candidate will be appointed at Postdoctoral Research Associate (Grade E) or Fellow (Grade F) depending on the skills and experience the individual canbring to the role. Candidates should demonstrate their achievement against the relevant criteria in the accompanying person specifications which will be used to make an appointment at an appropriate level.
