Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for an 18 months full-time, fixed-term contract position as a Research Fellow in Economics, in the Socio-Economic Marine Research Unit (SEMRU) at the National University of Ireland, Galway. This position is carried out with the support of the Marine Institute and funded by the Marine Research Programme by the Irish Government.

Job Description:

The successful candidate will be employed to undertake research in the area of marine economics and maritime commerce. The Research Fellow will join the current SEMRU team in examining a range of issues pertaining to the Irish Ocean Economy, the efficiency and competitiveness of the shipping and ports sector in Ireland and the socio-economic impact of Irish and European maritime related policy changes. The research fellow will also be expected to collaborate with the Irish Maritime Development Office in this research area. The post holder will be expected to present their work in oral format, at international project meetings and symposia as well as in related marine stakeholder fora. The researcher will also be expected to assist in writing up project proposals with the aim of generating future research funding. They will also be expected to collaborate on the production of reports and publications in the peer reviewed scientific literature and popular press.


Candidates must hold a PhD, or be near to completing a PhD, in a relevant research area (e.g. shipping economics, environmental economics, marine economics, etc.) and have a minimum of 2 years relevant research experience. Knowledge and/or experience in the analysis of maritime policy would be an advantage. Candidates should have excellent communication and organizational skills; be highly motivated and passionate about developing new research; and have strong documentation, oral and interpersonal skills.

Salary: €52,716 per annum.  Start date: Position is available from mid-February 2018
