Postdoctoral Researcher Land Use and Food Security

The University of Edinburgh - College of Science and Engineering - School of Geosciences

A postdoctoral research position is available in the field of environmental and economic analysis/modelling. The candidate will join an interdisciplinary research group with a focus on land use and food security, in the University of Edinburgh School of GeoSciences. The group uses methods, including simulation modelling, to investigate the effects of individual, institutional, and governmental policies on the land system, underpinned by human behaviour. The role will be part of a team working on the “Resilience of the UK food system to Global Shocks” (RUGS) project, which is UK research council funded (BBSRC, ESRC & NERC) until October 2020 under the Global Food Security (GFS) programme.

We are seeking an individual with economic and analytical skills to work within the group. The successful candidate will work to examine how food system resilience is impacted by market power, supply chains and policies.  Other project outputs will be used to inform this work to explore how interaction between national and international regulatory bodies and the private sector market power can amplify and mitigate risks.  The candidate will contribute to the research aims by helping to guide model development of a global land use and food security model. They will lead the identification and refinement of research questions, as well as developing innovative methodological approaches. The role will require suitable datasets to be identified, as well as generate and undertake analysis of empirical and model result data. There are considerable opportunities to shape the details of the research agenda, in consultation with other team members.

Candidates should hold a PhD (or be close to completion) and have appropriate experience indicated by publications in international peer reviewed journals.

The post is full-time and fixed term for 1 year starting 1 April 2018 (possible extension under this project until October 2020).

Salary: £32,548 - £38,833 per annum

The closing date is Wednesday 14th March 2018 at 5pm (GMT)
