Job summary
An opportunity has arisen for a Research Associate to work on Machine Learning and Simulation Software for Autonomous Vehicle Fleets. This post is funded from Innovate UK and the Centre for Connected and Autonomous and linked to a collaborative project that will design, trial and deploy a commercial, subscription-based platform, based on SAE Level 4 self-driving electric vehicles.

You will become a member of the Transport Systems & Logistics group (TSL) led by Dr Panagiotis Angeloudis, join the Centre for Transport Studies, and will be working closely with our industrial partners (aiPod, Oxbotica, Bosch) and Transport for London.

TSL is based in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, ranked 1st in the UK for Civil Engineering by the most recent Research Excellence Framework assessment (REF), and 3rd in the world by the QS 2018 survey.

The start date for this post is 1st of May 2018 (with some degree of flexibility) and the salary will be based on the level of relevant experience of the successful candidate.

This is a fixed term appointment for up to 2 years. 

Duties and responsibilities
You will contribute to the development of an in-house, large-scale, autonomous vehicle simulation platform that has been in development by the Transport Systems & Logistics group at Imperial College London. Through a combination of Machine Learning and Mathematical Programming, the project will focus on specifying aspects of the operational and design aspects of the platform across all levels, including autonomous driving, swarming behaviour, user charging, vehicle dispatching, public transport integration and the design of supporting infrastructure.

Essential requirements
You must have a good undergraduate degree/ MSc in Computer Science, Robotics, Transport/Civil/Electrical Engineering (or equivalent) for appointment at Research Assistant level and a PhD in Electrical or Transport Engineering, Computer Science, Robotics, (or equivalent) for appointment at Research Associate level. This must be accompanied by expertise in computer programming (in C#, Python or equivalent languages).

You will also have previous experience in several of the following areas:

  • Optimisation (Mathematical Programming, Metaheuristics)
  • Machine Learning (Reinforcement Learning, Bayesian Methods, Deep Learning)
  • Traffic / Agent-Based Simulation (eg. VISSIM, SUMO, Mesa)
  • Visualisation (eg. Unity, Monogame)

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £32,380 - £34,040 per annum.
