In collaboration with the National Army Museum (NAM), the University of Greenwich (UoG) seeks to recruit an outstanding researcher to investigate the social, cultural and military history of the Indian Army across the late colonial period.

Utilising the NAM’s rich and extensive Indian Army collections the project will provide new perspectives on the history of the Indian Army and the roles of Indian troops during the global wars of the twentieth century. Central to the project will be the ‘Punjab Registers’ – newly digitised archival sources which record the names and service histories of c. 320,000 Punjabi recruits. This collection offers unique insights into the men and communities that provided the bulk of the Indian Army’s troops from the late nineteenth century until independence and partition in 1947. The ‘Registers’ provide unparalleled insights into the rank and file who volunteered to serve on behalf of the British empire, enabling a much more complete account of the Indian Army’s history to be developed.

The scholarship holder will contribute to a major public engagement project exploring Punjab’s role in the First World War, and the legacies of wartime service on Punjab and the Punjabi diaspora. The scholarship will provide valuable opportunities for the successful candidate to gain experience working in both academic and heritage sectors on a project of international significance.

The successful candidate will be supervised by Professor Gavin Rand (UoG) and Dr Alan Jeffreys (NAM). Informal enquiries are encouraged; please contact g.t.rand@gre.ac.uk.
