Dean of the School of Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH)

Loughborough University

Loughborough is an exceptional university.   Our world-leading research, excellent education and student experience, unparalleled sporting achievements, and commitment to change, allow us to offer something truly distinctive from other UK Universities.

We continue to make significant steps towards being a proactively equitable, diverse and inclusive university.

At Loughborough, the Deans of our Academic Schools are central to the success of the university: leading our staff, inspiring our students, and shaping the university.

Our School of Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) is home to a warm and vibrant academic community of 180 lecturers and researchers, supported by 45 members of professional services staff.  It is a compassionate and progressive school and is the largest and most disciplinary diverse in the University.

The School is underpinned by an interdisciplinary perspective which sees colleagues draw upon one another’s expertise to maximise dynamism, collegiality and impact.  It is made up of the following departments: Communication and Media; English; Geography and Environment; Criminology, Sociology and Social Policy; and International Relations, Politics and History. The School is also home to the University Language Centre.

We deliver high quality teaching and an outstanding student experience, with more than 90% of the students being positive about the teaching on their course in the latest National Student Survey.

In the latest REF, 100% of the research impact was rated as 'world leading' or ‘internationally excellent’ for Communication and Media, Criminology, Geography, Politics, and Sociology and Social Policy with 83% of outputs rated ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ for English.

As Dean you will lead a School passionate about the value of Social Sciences and Humanities and the research that creates new knowledge to enrich the social, economic, cultural and environmental well-being of people and places. You will advocate for the value of the Social Sciences and Humanities both internally and externally.

You will be joining Loughborough at an exciting time, our new university Strategy (‘Creating Better Futures. Together.’) is advancing our purpose, values and aims, offering a platform from which we may change the university and the world for the better.

I look forward to receiving your application and thank you for considering this opportunity.
