Lecturer/Assistant Lecturer in Education – Teaching of Social Sciences (Geography)

Qualifications and Experience 

The successful candidate must at least: 

  • Master’s degree in Caribbean Geography or a closely related field, with a PG DipEd in the Teaching of Social Sciences (Geography) 

and

  • Have at least submitted a research dissertation towards attainment of a relevant PhD, and be awaiting presentation and defense. 

Candidates should also possess:

  • Ideally, three (3) years’ teaching experience in Social Sciences (Geography) in a higher education environment
  • Good record of research and publications in reputable, peer-reviewed journals
  • Proficient in the use of online teaching methods (e.g. Zoom)
  • Competence in online and distance education 

Candidates with the following would have an advantage:

  • PhD in Education, Geography or a closely related field
  • Ideally, at least three (3) years’ experience in supervision of practicum in Geography at the graduate level
  • Ideally, at least three (3) years’ graduate teaching experience
  • Proficiency in teaching in geography/environmental science 

The following would be considered assets:

  • BSc in Caribbean Geography/Environmental Science or a closely related field
  • Certificate in university teaching and learning
  • Support for teaching multivariate quantitative research methods and/or qualitative research methods 

Only holders of a relevant PhD will be eligible for appointment at the Lecturer level.

Special Responsibilities 

  • Teaching in the Diploma in Education programme and the B.Ed. programme
  • Teaching research methods courses at the Master’s level
  • Assessing and examining student work
  • Supervising graduate research projects
  • Serving on committees at the Department, Faculty, and University levels
  • Participating in the design and development of courses, teaching materials and/or programmes
  • Advising postgraduate students
  • Engaging in community outreach initiatives
  • Contributing to the administrative functioning of the Department, and to the cultural and intellectual life of the University
  • Collaborating with colleagues in teaching, administration and research projects
  • Committing to the vision, mission and values of the School of Education
