We are looking for an outstanding postdoctoral researcher (PDRA) to join our Palaeo-environments, Ice sheets and Climate Change (PICC) team. The successful candidate will join the UK Sensitivity of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet to 2C Warming (SWAIS2C) team, involving scientists from Imperial College and the universities of Durham, Exeter, Leeds and UCL. You will look into two aspects of SWAIS2C, both of which have a strong glacial sedimentology focus.

As part of our vibrant PICC team, which is focused on improving our understanding of the mechanisms of past change in ice sheets, oceans, and global climate. The successful applicant will work with Dr. James Smith in collaboration with UK SWAIS2C colleagues and International SWAIS2C partners as well as our scientists.

You’ll help us to deliver important information on ice sheet history, spanning recent changes to glacial-interglacial intervals and beyond.

Within the role, there will be an opportunity to develop grant writing, project/team management as well as technical courses i.e., ArcGIS, MATLAB, Python etc. BAS offer a variety of development opportunities both in house and across UKRI.

Your main responsibilities will include:

• Workingwith SWAIS2C team colleagues to integrate these interpretations with existing archives from the Ross Sea (e.g., KIS2 & KIS3) in order to help interpret the SWAIS2C drill core. Drilling will take place during 2024/25 (Kamb Ice Stream site) and 2025/26 (Crary Ice Rise site).
• Contribute to core sampling/facies analysis of SWAIS2C drill core at the University of Otago, NZ in early to mid-2025.
• Deliver research outputs, publish them in international peer-reviewed journals and present them at international conferences and internal meetings.
• Prepare and contribute to reports, conference presentations, scientific papers and research proposals for the SWAIS2C project.
• Maintain a high-profile for UKRI-NERC/BAS/PICC and SWAIS2C within the UK and international research community.

For the role of Glacial Sedimentologist we are looking for somebody who will have a PhD in glacial sedimentology/geology or a related field, such as marine geology with a focus on ice sheet/shelf history. The post will commence on 1st of May 2024 or at an agreed later date.
