The Department of Art & Performance within Manchester School of Art is looking to appoint two Professors in Fine Art.

Art & Performance is a long-standing cornerstone of the creative offer at Manchester School of Art and is characterised by interdisciplinarity, collaboration and contextual understanding. We are looking to build upon our REF2021 performance, which ranked second in the UK for research power with 100% of its research environment and impact rated as internationally excellent or world leading.

Art & Performance offers a vibrant environment for interdisciplinary research that informs our teaching and learning offer. We recognise the importance of individual practice and collaborative work within the expanded field of contemporary art and visual culture and seek to provide a supportive and collegiate research and studio culture for staff and students to develop their potential as academics, artists, curators, performers and writers. Existing areas of expertise include but are not limited to: art and archives, fine art and curating, memory and materiality, painting, sculpture and visual culture.

The role

The role of Professor is one of the highest academic distinctions conferred by the University and post holders are expected to have an international reputation and have made a sustained, significant and original impact to knowledge in their particular field, and to contribute and operate at the highest levels of seniority.

The Professors in Fine Art will be appointed to our Research, Education and Citizenship (REC) career pathway promoting excellence and international leadership in research, learning and teaching, and student experience. You will bring:

  • A world-leading expertise in fine art practice and research.
  • An excellent international reputation that contributes to QS Rankings.
  • A substantial history of REF portfolio and/or publication outputs supporting the highest level of impact case studies.
  • A strong track record of grant capture and income generation.

Candidates should also have teaching experience in Fine Art practice, contextual studies and/or art history and be able to contribute to the overall strategic leadership and management of the department. All Professoriate staff are expected to contribute at least 20% of their time to teaching on campus, including the supervision of Postgraduate Research students.
