This post is within the Healthcare Associated Infection, Fungal, Antimicrobial Resistance, Antimicrobial Utilisation & Sepsis Division (Clinical & Public Health group) of UKHSA. The mission of the division is to protect people from healthcare-associated and antimicrobial resistant infections, through world-leading public health microbiology, outbreak response, surveillance, antimicrobial stewardship, modelling, research and evidence-based interventions.

The post holder will provide a leadership role for HCAI & AMR health and economic modelling within the HCAI & AMR Modelling and Evaluation Group. This will include the instigation, development, coordination, management and delivery of AMR & HCAI modelling and economics research. This post contributes to UKHSA’s capacity and capability building role for the high priority area of AMR & HCAI. The post holder will be expected to play a leading role in strengthening modelling and economics of infectious diseases as an integral part of UKHSA.

The post-holder is expected to work collaboratively, particularly establishing and maintaining strong links with academic institutions, to develop appropriate evidence to optimise decisions on national disease control policy.

About you

  • PhD - with a focus on mathematical modelling/health economics relevant to infectious diseases
  • Evidence of continuous professional development in the field of mathematical modelling, economic evaluations, epidemiology or health protection with senior postgraduate research experience relevant to AMR & HCAI infection prevention and control
  • Significant senior management and leadership experience
  • Experience of development and application of mathematical/economic models of communicable disease transmission and effects of interventions.
    • Specifically, experience of development of mathematical/economic models relevant or transferable to AMR & HCAI, preferably for use in informing national policy.
    • Analysing epidemiological and cost data including to parameterise transmission-dynamic or intervention evaluation models
    • Computer programming
  • Experience of initiating and writing successful research grant applications, alongside leading secured grants and scientific projects including project, resource and budget management
  • Experience of line management and appraisal of staff as well as working effectively across all levels of seniority
  • Nationally and internationally recognized track record of research with a proven record of collaborative and multi-disciplinary working within and across organisations, alongside a record of publication of scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Demonstrable excellent written and verbal communication skills, including ability to communicate complex ideas and methods (both orally and written) clearly and succinctly to a wide range of audiences.
  • Highly self-motivated, with proven ability to initiate, sustain and complete project work, working with initiative, independence and autonomously without supervision
  • Organisation, planning and time-management skills, including ability to meet deadlines, develop long-term plans, taking into account uncertainties across a range of organisations
