A position exists, for a Research Assistant/Associate in the Department of Engineering, to work on Power Electronics and Magnetics for Electromobility and Electrical Power.

The post holder will be located in West Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, UK.

Key responsibilities and duties are the design, implementation, and testing of high-current power-electronic circuits and circuit boards as well as of magnetic components, magnetic fields, and motor technology, reporting progress in regular meetings with the international partners, writing of research papers, and establishing research collaborations and writing proposals.

The skills, qualifications and experience required to perform the role are experience in high-current, high-frequency PCB designs and SiC/GaN-based power converters; familiarity with magnetic simulation software packages and finite element analysis; previous knowledge in wireless power transfer; experience in spatial magnetic field shaping; experience with mathematical modelling and common convex optimization algorithms; experience with mathematical modelling for non-deterministic polynomial (NP-hard) problems; familiarity with common digital controllers/signal processors as well as control strategies and in innovative modulation strategy designs; experience in designing integrated power electronics for battery or sensor systems; proven track record of publishing in tier-1 journals; experience in dealing with international collaborations; experience in grant writing, preferably in English; experience of working in collaborative research projects with regular strict milestones, external partners relying on results, and regular progress and justification meetings with a sponsor or manager, and ability to prepare status reports and lead a status meeting.

The candidate will have or be close to obtaining a PhD in electrical engineering or a similar field with work closely related to the research to be performed in this position.

Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD. Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will be appointed at Research Assistant level, which will be amended to Research Associate once the PhD has been awarded.

Applicants wishing to work part-time (minimum 50% FTE) will be considered.

Salary Ranges:

Research Assistant: £29,605 - £33,966

Research Associate: £36,024 - £44,263

Fixed-term: This post is available for 12 months in the first instance, with the possibility of extension, subject to available funding.
