About the opportunity 

The University of Sydney welcomes applications for Lecturers/Senior Lecturer/Associate Professors in the academic disciplines outlined below, during an exciting and innovative time. With the introduction of the new University of Sydney Enterprise Agreement 2023-26, the University has committed to establishing and advertising new continuing education focused (EF) academic positions, across the Faculty of Medicine and Health.

The University aims to attract and retain the best and brightest emerging academics. The positions in this opportunity are for talented educators with a passion for, and demonstrated excellence in, educational practice and innovation, and research capability (in disciplinary and/or education-related research). This newly-recruited group of educators will support an uplift in the teaching capability and student experience at the University of Sydney, while also developing as leaders in the education space at the University. 

You will have the opportunity to make a significant contribution to teaching and learning design, delivery, and evaluation in your specialised field while you also contribute to research in relation to your discipline and/or your educational practice. As part of this role, you will also contribute to the governance, leadership, and engagement work of your employing school, particularly as it relates to education. 

Successful candidates will be expected to dedicate most of their contribution to teaching and teaching-related activities (70%), while also engaging in research (20%) and governance, leadership, and engagement (10%). Successful appointees support, coordinate, and teach undergraduate and postgraduate coursework Units of Study. The delivery of clinical laboratories tutorials, lectures, and workshop management and teaching may also be a key part of the roles. These positions may also assist and guide the academic coordinators of other units within the discipline. 

Over time, staff appointed to these roles will be supported to engage with professional development opportunities to build their capability to lead change and improvement in teaching at the University. 

Your key responsibilities will be to: 

  • Undertake a leadership role in educational innovation, curriculum design and review, contributing to outstanding educational delivery and outcomes
  • Design and engage in high-quality teaching and learning experiences which meet the University’s expectations and standards for education
  • Deliver outstanding teaching and learning outcomes for students
  • Develop teaching and subject materials, working with more senior academics within the University
  • Maintain relevant Work, Health and Safety requirements and management including laboratory and/or field work
  • Through research and scholarly creative work, contribute to knowledge within your discipline or area of expertise, particularly as it relates to teaching and learning in your discipline
  • Develop and refine your research skills, particularly as they relate to evaluating and improving teaching and learning in your discipline
  • Maintain quality, standards and excellence in your educational activities and output
  • Contribute to the governance, leadership, and engagement work in your school.

Sydney Dental School (SDS) 

As an Academic School within the Faculty of Medicine and Health, SDS is consistently ranked as one of Australia's top dental schools. Through our delivery of integrated research, clinical training, and professional education, students benefit from the opportunity to gain experience in a diverse range of clinical facilities, to interact with dental and other health professionals, and develop an understanding of real-world challenges in oral health and healthcare. 

The Sydney Dental School (SDS) seeks a number of positions across all disciplines of our School. These positions will be crucial in making a significant contribution to teaching and learning practice and engaging in educational leadership within the Sydney Dental School 

  • Lecturer in Dentistry (Education Focused) Level B
  • Senior Lecturer in Dentistry (Education Focused) Level C
  • Associate Professor in Dentistry (Education Focussed) Level D

We are looking for candidates with or eligible for Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA registration as a dentist or dental specialist and a Doctorate or PhD in a relevant dentistry field. We are also seeking candidates with academic qualifications in health professions education. 

School of Medical Sciences (SOMS) 

  • Associate Professor in Anatomy (Education Focused) Level D 

The School of Medical Sciences is recognised as one of the leading centres for medical science education in the world. With over 100 years of excellence in education, we are proud to be training the next generation of medical scientists, clinicians and health care providers who will be leading members of the medical research and professional communities. Our team of educators and researchers lead key, internationally-competitive research in areas from molecules to medicines, and from patient to policy, across a range of therapeutic areas. 

Our school has a very large portfolio of human anatomy teaching. We teach human anatomy to science students, students studying professional programs including medicine and dentistry, as well as applied science students studying subjects including physiotherapy and sports science. 

We seek to appoint a highly-motivated Associate Professor in Anatomy, with a track record of education research, to make a significant contribution to enhancing our curriculum design, development, and delivery of human anatomy teaching from first year to degree completion. Please note all positions at SOMS are required to teach at the Westmead campus and the University Department of Rural Health site in Dubbo as part of our commitment to engagement and training in health. 

Sydney School of Public Health (SSPH) 

  • Lecturer in Quantitative Methods in Public Health (Education Focused) Level B 

The Sydney School of Public Health is a network of educators, researchers, research groups and centres that facilitate the study of public health. Offering educational and research opportunities, the school’s work is recognised as an institutional strength for the University, tackling global health challenges and striving to improve equity in communities locally and around the world. The School is widely known for its strengths in biostatistics and epidemiology. 

We seek to appoint a highly-motivated Lecturer in Quantitative Methods in Public Health (Education Focused) to make a significant contribution to our curriculum design, development, and delivery of postgraduate biostatistics and epidemiology courses within our Public Health programs. This position will also contribute to the coordination and supervision of applied research project courses across the school. 

Sydney Medical School (SMS) 

  • Lecturer in Medicine/Surgery (Education Focused) Level B 

Since 1856 The Sydney Medical School has been dedicated to developing caring, clinically-outstanding, research-capable, and globally-aware graduates who become leaders in their chosen professions. 

We advocate for and take a leadership role in contributing to high-quality healthcare and wellbeing. Our staff play a major role in the provision of healthcare in NSW and in a number of countries in our region. They are leading clinicians who are actively involved in the evolution of care and hold key roles in government and non-government organisations, hospitals, and other major health providers. 

We will also consider two part time 0.50 FTE (minimum) positions to make a significant contribution to our curriculum design, development, and delivery of our unique Masters in Surgery and Masters in Medicine courses. 

We are seeking clinicians with lecturing/teaching experience either in a university or hospital environment. This position will also act as an important liaison between our students and unit coordinators providing continual improvement to our student experience. 

Sydney Nursing School (SNS) 

  • Senior Lecturer in Mental Health Nursing (Education Focused) Level C 

The University of Sydney Susan Wakil School of Nursing and Midwifery (Sydney Nursing School)  is the school of choice to nurture global citizens in health and wellbeing. We are currently ranked #1 in Australia and #13 globally in the QS World University Rankings by Subject. As a leader in nursing research and education, Sydney Nursing School produces graduates who possess critical thinking skills and knowledge of local and global health issues to provide exceptional care for individuals and communities. We are also home to the Discipline of Nutrition and Dietetics and the Broken Hill University Department of Rural Health. 

We are seeking a full-time academic at the level of Senior Lecturer with a deep expertise and passion for teaching mental health nursing. You will have a PhD in nursing, public health or an academic field relevant to the discipline, including a qualification in a mental health discipline and extensive experience in this area of health.  A current AHPRA registration (Nurse) is a requirement for this position.  You will make a significant contribution to high-quality teaching and innovative learning practices, curriculum design and evaluation. 

The aims of these education focused roles are to attract and retain the best and brightest emerging academics, within a specialised category of academic engagement for talented educators with a passion for, and demonstrated excellence in, pedagogical practice and educational innovation. 

About you

We are looking for candidates who understand the principles and pedagogy of good curriculum and assessment design, and who will make a significant contribution to improving the student experience at the University. Successful candidates will understand or be willing to learn the research principles around teaching and learning design, delivery, and evaluation. They will have a demonstrated ability to interact effectively with students, facilitating and guiding their learning in research, theory and laboratory sessions. They will also have demonstrated ability to conduct research and (at all levels, but particularly at Level C and D) a willingness to develop a program of education-related research over time. 

We are therefore looking for Sydney Horizon Educators who have: 

  • A PhD or nearly completed a PhD in an academic field relevant to the discipline
  • Experience in assessment, feedback and learning by design
  • Experience in contributing to outstanding educational design, delivery, evaluation and outcomes
  • A developing network of relationships with key academic, industry or professional institutions partners and stakeholders
  • Demonstrated experience in supervising or mentoring others and/or coordinating team activities
  • Sound experience of teaching and learning, and the ability to contribute to teaching at undergraduate, honours and postgraduate levels in lecture, tutorial and practical settings.
  • A high level of interpersonal skills including the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues
  • A record of excellent teaching, learning, and assessment practice in a tertiary environment, as evidenced through student and supervisor feedback
  • High-level written and verbal communication skills
  • The capacity to engage students and enable a supportive, inclusive learning environment
  • Proven experience in designing, implementing and evaluating teaching and learning initiatives
  • A demonstrated commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching
  • The ability to work collaboratively with other staff, including professional staff, and foster principles of equity, diversity and inclusion. 

Senior Lecturer, who, in addition to the above can demonstrate:

  • Their knowledge and understanding of the key, strategic, education-related issues in the higher education sector and/or the University
  • Experience as an effective unit, course or program coordinator or director (especially for large classes), as evidenced by student and staff feedback
  • Some experience in people leadership within the higher education sector
  • Significant capability in educational leadership, service, governance, and engagement (either through their work at a university or through association with a non-university organisation). 

Associate Professor who, in addition to above, can demonstrate:

  • Service, governance, and engagement through their prior work in university and/or complex non-university organisations
  • Ability to attract nationally-competitive research funding, particularly from the Australian Research Council
  • Leadership of curriculum development than enhances student learning in the discipline curriculum
  • Their ability to obtain competitive grant funding for their education scholarship
  • Leadership within the higher education sector, including demonstrated success in supervising and/or mentoring others (including honours students) to achieve career progression or professional advancement
  • Established relationships with key academic, industry and professional institutions, partners, and stakeholders that can be leveraged to enhance the standing of education in the discipline, School, Faculty and University.

The position level will be determined based on the candidate’s skills, experience, and knowledge assessed by the selection committee.
