Change your career, change lives

The Open University is the UK’s largest university, a world leader in flexible part-time education combining a mission to widen access to higher education with research excellence, transforming lives through education.

The role

We are looking to recruit several Practice Tutors in all specialism areas of Nursing in The School of Health, Wellbeing and Social Care at the Open University across England. The specialisms include Adult, Mental Health, Children and Young People and Learning Disabilities. Our practice tutors are integral to the quality of the students and employer experience of our nursing courses. They are a vital part of delivering our tuition strategy and are ambassadors for the OU, and are student and employer-facing.

The positions are Part-Time and Full-Time (0.165 – 1.0 FTE dependent on number of students) and would involve supporting our students who are undertaking practice modules. The position is home-based and has no fixed core hours. It is fixed term (3 years), with a probation period of two years. The annual salary and workload are fixed, but there are significant workload peaks and troughs, mainly linked to providing support with regular review meetings as part of apprenticeship requirements.

Other tasks will be required such as focused student support such as supporting with portfolios, working with employer contacts to support students in practice and ensuring quality assurance aspects are met. Some evening and weekend work will be required. The appropriate level of FTE will be discussed at interview, and there is the possibility of increasing the FTE later. The starting full-time salary is £37,099 paid pro rata based on your FTE. The position is paid over the full calendar year.

What you get in return

We have a strong commitment to providing training and development in and beyond your current role. To ensure they remain up to date with developments in their academic field, Practice Tutors are allocated 6 days (pro-rata) per annum for PT-led (i.e. self-directed) Academic Currency and 1 day, plus 5 days pro rata, per annum for Agreed Academic Currency and Professional Development.

Benefits include a supportive and friendly working environment, and a mentor will be provided if you are new to the OU, 27 days holiday per annum (pro rata) with variable (pro rata) Bank holidays and an attractive pensions proposition.
