We are thrilled to announce a unique opportunity at Birkbeck, University of London. We are looking for a distinguished individual to take up the role of Professor and Director of the Institute for Crime and Justice Policy Research (ICPR).

This role offers the chance to lead and expand ICPR's programme of academically-grounded, policy-oriented research on crime and justice, with the aim of advancing knowledge, supporting better policymaking and practice, and enhancing ICPR's national and international reputation.

As the Professor and Director of ICPR, you will:

  • Lead the development of ICPR’s national and international reputation for academically-grounded, policy-oriented research on crime and justice and implement the research strategy
  • Oversee ICPR’s ambitious, wide-ranging programme of work and manage the staff team which comprises 10 to 14 academics and researchers
  • Secure research and other funding from a range of sources, exploiting new opportunities for income generation and ensuring ICPR's financial sustainability and future growth
  • Support ICPR staff in the development of funding proposals and their own research and professional profiles
  • Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in Birkbeck's School of Social Sciences and the development of new teaching programmes, modules and short courses.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A strong record of publications in criminology, law or socio-legal studies and expertise in a range of research methodologies
  • Experience of successfully raising research funding from various sources
  • Experience of working with justice practitioners and policy-makers and of disseminating research outputs to a wide range of diverse audiences
  • Experience of managing research teams and large funded research projects
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with individuals and groups in differing formal and informal settings.

ICPR’s current research is focused on three thematic priorities: policing and the policed; courts, court users and the judicial process; and prisons and the use of imprisonment.

Core activities include the compilation and hosting of the World Prison Brief online database providing information on prison systems around the world; this comprehensive evidence base for penal reform is trusted and used by governmental and non-governmental organisations, international agencies, academics, journalists and others worldwide. Underlying all ICPR’s work is a commitment to the principles of justice, fairness and human rights.
