Achieving the Remarkable

The University of Southampton is in the top 1% of world universities and is one of the UK’s top 15 research-intensive universities.  Committed to excellence in all we do, we are growing and investing in our research and people to accelerate our remarkable achievements. With particular focus on four key impact themes chosen to build on the university’s existing strengths and to address the most complex societal and environmental challenges: Artificial Intelligence, sustainability and resilience, decarbonisation and engineering better health, this role is integral to our aim of making a lasting difference.

The Philosophy Department at Southampton has an excellent reputation for teaching and research. We were ranked 6th in REF2021 by overall GPA and 1st equal for impact beyond the academy. We are based within the School of Humanities in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities and have close interdisciplinary links with other members of the School and the wider University. Our research covers a very wide range of the subject, and includes developing interests in philosophical questions around artificial intelligence and sustainability.

The role

We seek to appoint a Lecturer in Philosophy, with research interests in philosophical issues raised by artificial intelligence and/or sustainability, the environment and climate change. The position is available from August 2024, on a permanent basis.

About you

You will have a record of high-quality published research in Philosophy, commensurate with career stage. You  will be enthusiastic and flexible in contributing to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, and will be keen to participate fully in the academic activities of a lively and committed department which prizes collegiality very highly. You will also be interested in seeking opportunities to develop the impact of your research beyond the academy, and experience of such work may be an advantage.

Whilst this post is offered on a full-time permanent basis, hours are not a barrier, and we are interested in individuals wishing to work 0.6 FTE and above.

Please include a sample of written work in your application. Informal enquiries may be addressed to the Head of Philosophy, Prof. Jonathan Way (j.way@soton.ac.uk).

What we can offer you

With a generous holiday allowance and additional university closure days we are committed to supporting our staff and open to a flexible working approach. We give full consideration to applicants that wish to work flexibly and those who have taken a career break. View our Benefits Explained website for full details.

We aim to create an environment where everyone can thrive and are proactive in fostering a culture of inclusion, respect and equality of opportunity. We welcome applications from candidates who are committed to helping us create an inclusive work environment. We particularly encourage applications from people who identify with one or more of the following: Black, Asian, a minority ethnic background, coming from a lower socio-economic background, LGBTQ+, a woman or having a disability as these identities are currently underrepresented in our working community.
