St John’s College seeks to appoint an outstanding individual as the Dean of Anglican Formation at Cranmer Hall, to work alongside gifted colleagues training people for Christian ministry and mission, and to be a key member of the senior leadership team of a diverse and flourishing theological education institution within Durham University.

Job Summary and Purpose

The role of the Dean of Anglican Formation is to oversee the worship and formational life of the Cranmer Hall, with particular responsibility for students training for licensed ministries in the Church of England. The Dean will work closely with and (as required) deputize for the Warden, offering oversight and sharing decision making on strategic, operational, and development matters as part of the Cranmer Hall Officers (senior leadership team). At a time of change and opportunity for the Church and the theological education sector, the Dean of Anglican Formation will support the ongoing development of the College and the training of Christ-like ministers for the Church.

Key responsibilities

  • To serve as part of the Cranmer Hall Officer (CHO) team, comprising the Warden, Dean of Anglican Formation, Academic Dean, and Director of Free Church Formation, sharing strategic and operational oversight of Cranmer Hall.
  • To deputize for the Warden on occasion and as directed: within Cranmer Hall; as part of the wider St John’s College leadership team (including the possibility of on-call duties); and with external stakeholders.
  • To serve as Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead for Cranmer Hall.
  • To lead, within the CHO team, in developing new ways for Cranmer Hall to offer training in missional leadership and resource the Church theologically for its missionary task. One current area of exploration is children’s and youth ministry.
  • To promote and represent Cranmer Hall in recruitment, through wider service to the Church, and in public speaking, writing, and research in the postholder’s areas of specialism.
  • To oversee, in conjunction with the Warden, the formational programme for Church of England ordinands, with responsibility for induction and non-accredited aspects of training.
  • To oversee the worshipping life of Cranmer Hall within St John’s College, working with the College Chaplain and Warden.
  • To be active in teaching and supervision at BA and (depending on qualifications and expertise) at postgraduate level. The specific subject areas and modules to be taught will be determined in conversation with the successful candidate; there is no requirement to have an academic specialism within the field of Anglican studies. Currently we are looking to strengthen our teaching capacity in Homiletics, Leadership, Pastoral Care, and Biblical Studies.
  • To act as tutor for up to 6 ordinands, supporting their Christ-like ministerial formation in line with the Church of England’s qualities.
